Author's Note: I've been wanting to do an Alice in Wonderland fanfic for a while now, and luckily I just got inspired. In my opinion, the Joker and the Cheshire Cat make quite a pair (no, not THAT way - Joker only has that for Jonathan Crane, hahaha - well, actually I'm being serious) with their spontaneous personalities and everything that they are and stand for.

The grin was malignant even on its best days, and undeniably psychotic.

Shared by two creatures who, although differing somewhat in appearance, were very much alike personality-wise - both as insane as the identical smile they bore.

They met before the Joker had even the chance to jump willingly down the rabbit hole that had somehow mysteriously appeared in the grass before him in the course of his lucid - well, lucid to him - daydreams as he sat with his back resting against a shady apple tree.

The Joker cocked his head to the side, clicking his tongue in curiosity as he peered down at the gap in the earth at his side. "Hmm - I wonder where this'll, uh, lead to." He giggled.

"Weee-eeell," drawled a slightly whiney voice that reminded the clown of his own, "that depends on where exactly it is you want to go."

Joker looked up: a heavy purple Cat lay contentedly on the branch above his head, grinning down at him.

The clown took an immediate - and quite irrational - dislike to the feline's smile: it looked too much like his own.

And it definitely did not belong there.

He swung up onto the limb beside the Cat as he mused aloud, "Hmm. . .hmm. . .Now where do I want to go?"

And then he whipped his favorite knife from his pocket and rammed the blade into the Cat's mouth, pressing the serrated edge against the moist inside of his cheek.

The Cat was taken completely off-guard, so shocked that he even forgot to pull his trademark disappearing act. All he could do was meet those depthless black pits with his own uneasy yellow eyes.

"Y'know, the destination really doesn't matter to me," Joker said pleasantly as he watched the Cat squirm.

"I just want my smile back."

The gloved wrist twitched -

And in death all but the Cat's odd grin faded away, stretched outward at the corners by a pair of twin ragged scars forever dripping blood.
