A/N: I wrote this for the prompt: Write about Valentine's Day without mentioning these words: Valentine's Day, Cupid, love, roses, flowers, hears, February.
Let Me Show You
Today I was subjected to a rather emotional, curious Earth holiday which I had previously managed to avoid. It is another one of their many traditions dedicated to a saint none of them seem to know anything about. Instead, as with many of their holidays, it is associated with particular flora and some symbol. In this case it is a naked child bearing an ancient ranged weapon of Earth, the bow and arrow. It is entirely devoted to an emotion, though with the typical lack of clarity common to humans it is unclear if it refers to passion, lust, devotion, romanticism, none or all of the above and more, as all humans give different answers. All that is clear is that is celebrates the state of an exclusive couple, much to the dislike of all those who are single and prefer to call the occasion "Singles Awareness Day" Even so, everyone expects to receive card and/or sweets from even the most passing of acquaintances, even, as is common in humans, they do not all give out cards and sweets. So once again one of their holiday is actually an elaborate disguise for ritualized gift giving.
Spock's log was interrupted when Captain Kirk entered his quarters.
"Spock, what are you writing about?" he asked.
"Simply the illogic of this particular holiday you insist on celebrating."
Jim smiled and leaned in to look over Spock's shoulder at the screen, "Oh, really," he said as he began to read it through.
Considering the Captain's tone of voice, Spock was suddenly very disconcerted over what might happen next.
"You know, Spock, you forgot the most common activity holidays give the excuse to pursue, even more than gift giving."
"And what is that, Captain?"
Jim leaned in even closer, a grin on his face, "Let me show you."
