Sneaking
.
.
Randy felt somewhat guilty. Sneaking around like that in the dead of the night…
Sure, he was the Ninja and sneaking around was his thing, but not when he had to do so in his best friend's house.
Or better, in his best friend's sister's room.
"You know, you could have asked your sister to give the console back once we were done with homework…" Randy hissed as lowly as possible. Hopefully it was enough for Howard to hear and for Heidi to not wake up.
Howard placed the tip of his foot down as carefully as he could and Randy wondered how much experience his friend had in sneaking into his sister's bedroom while she slept. Right now it looked like he had done this before. Perhaps way too many times to actually count them.
"Quiet, Cunningham!" the large boy hissed back. "Or you will wake her up! Then we can't have that Grave Puncher night marathon we have planned for the whole past week!"
There was a soft creak and the two boys froze, cold sweat running down their backs when they realized Heidi had shifted on her bed. They spent perhaps a minute or two like that before Howard dared to take a second step.
"You could always use the suit…"
Randy nearly shouted out his indignation, but managed to just let out a soft gasp. "I won't abuse it a second time!" he whispered, waving his arms into the air. "You know what happened last time I did. Now just get the console so we can get out of here."
The two continued to tiptoe in silence, hoping to locate their console as soon as possible. Problem was, their only source of light was a streetlamp from outside the bedroom's window and on the other side of the street.
"This brings back memories…" Howard said, heading towards Heidi's desk. He could see a faint box-like shape, so maybe that was their console. "Remember, Cunningham? We used to sneak around a lot when we played Ninja."
"And got in so much troubles when your sister caught us in her closet," Randy replied with a roll of his eyes. "Did you find the console?"
Howard grabbed the box and held it up to inspect it in what little light he had from the window. All he could make out was that it was of a really dark color and that it had the same size of his console. To further make sure it was actually what he was looking for, he traced his fingers along the surface, finding those details that characterized a console like buttons and the cd's slot.
"I think so. Let's get out of-"
Howard was stopped by the sudden shifting of sheets and a light groan coming from his sister, making him and Randy freeze where they were standing for a second time since their sneaking had started. They watched in horror as Heidi sat up and waved a hand in search of the light button.
Randy had absolutely no idea how he did what he did. Perhaps it was his Ninja training and instincts honed during countless battles against monsters and killer robots. All he knew, however, was that in the span of two or three seconds he hauled Howard into Heidi's closet and closed the folding doors without making a sound.
When the yellow light filtered through the cracks in the door, Randy and Howard looked at each other and could not help the grin that formed on their faces.
Yes…
Just like old times.
