"I'm not supposed be here," said a low, but gentle, voice behind Massie Block as she sat atop a bar stool in her basement admiring a candy cane that was leftover from her Christmas party in her hand.
"Then why are you here, Fisher?" Massie replied with cold recognition.
"Claire forgot her coat after the party," Cam informed her quickly, reminding Massie of the scene where Cam and Claire were cuddled together on the couch kissing during her Valentine's Day party. She rolled her sparkling amber eyes and let out a deep sigh, brushing her chestnut colored hair over her shoulder and letting it cascade down her back like a beautiful waterfall.
"Don't say her name," she groaned. "Can't you see that it hurts enough that I have to see that prat everyday?"
"Don't call her that, Massie," Cam pleaded. "You know that you're the only one for me. You're the only one that will ever be able to hold my heart the way that you do."
"Why are you still with her then?" Massie nearly shouted as she spun in the stool, knocking over a shot glass, shattering the broken pieces all over the countertop. "You know that she doesn't deserve you. She isn't right for you and you don't even love her!" she cried resentfully, wiping away the glittering tears that appeared in her eyes. "If you loved me than you wouldn't be kissing her the way you do."
"I kiss her that way because I can't do that with you in front of anyone. When I kiss her, I think of you; I'm wishing that she's you!" Cam shook his head, not letting his blue and green eyes reach her amber ones. "You know that I'm crazy about you, Massie, but you know my parents. They don't think that you're good for me and they'd ship me off to boarding school with Harris if they caught me going out with a Block. You know that our families don't get along well, and you know what would happen if we got together! If I stay with Claire, than they'll think that I'm with her when I'm actually with you!"
"We could run away together!" Massie shouted at him, trying to think of something—anything—that would get Cam away from the likes of Claire Lyons.
Cam only shook his head. "We're hardly fifteen."
Massie sighed and an awkward silence erupted between the two. Massie turned away from him and stared intently at the candy cane in her hand.
"I hate you," she told him, keeping her eyes focused on the candy cane.
Another silence occurred between them. Massie wouldn't let herself look at the boy who had hurt her so much.
"I'll see you tomorrow," Cam replied gently. He walked behind Massie and slid his arms around her waist, leaned in close to her ear, and whispered, "I love you, Massie Block."
Massie turned slightly in her seat to look at him and whispered back, "I know you do." Cam looked into her beautiful eyes and smiled.
"That's my girl."
