Clark stopped short at the top of the stairs. "Lana?"
The slim figure bent over the telescope straightened and smiled. "If I keep bothering you here you it won't be the fortress of solitude anymore," she said lightly. "You're not bothering me," Clark replied, "And besides, theres never been much solitude...big mice around here." Lana smiled, cringed, and did a quick mice check of her boots.
Her eyes met Clark's and Lana's face became serious. "Clark," she started, "Lex told me. He told me it was you who gave my necklace back." Clark dropped his eyes to the floor, and he wasn't looking for oversized rodents. "I know I should have just knocked on your door...Im sorry I was sneaking around." He turned his back to her. "I just knew it was important to you."
Without thinking, Lana bridged the gap between herself and Clark. "It was one of the sweetest things anyone has ever done for me," she said, hugging him. "Thank you."
Clark willed his body unsuccessfully to stay still. His arms instinctively circled around Lana's small frame, and he couldn't help but bend his head into the curve of her shoulder. He kept his grip loose but at the same time, she could feel how strong he was. He actually was slightly worried that he might break her.
The embrace was closer than Lana had intended it to be, but there was nothing bad about it. No matter how big the man, they were still all little boys inside. These big football players weren't fooling anybody.
Lana slowly lowered herself off her tip toes until her head rested against Clark's racing heart. "Something told me you'd give good hugs," she whispered, giggling. Clark was proud of himself for retaining the ability to speak. "Well, I have many talents," he said, looking down at her. With a playful punch to Clark's stomach, Lana stepped back. "Have fun with your mice, Clark. I'll see you in school tomorrow," she called over her shoulder. "'Night, Lana," he replied quietly. The subtle smell of flowers lifted as the footsteps faded on the stairs. How was it that a speeding car hit him and caused no pain, but when the girl from the next farm over left a room... it hurt?
