I was in a pretty big mess. Before I left Midgar, I'd just been your average city boy. Now, everything had changed. Ever since that guy from Shinra had started headhunting me…..
I'd left the city in search of money, and fame, and eventually the latter found me, but the former left me alone. Now I think about it, that's probably all for the best. The guy I had to take out was probably going into the history books, if he did what Scarlet had told me about. Yeah, he'd be pretty infamous, if the Shinra twisted the truth in their favour. The Dark Cloud, they'd call him, or maybe something more imaginative. Most likely, he'll simply get branded the same as those terrorists, Avalanche, but there was always hope that he'd get the recognition he deserved. Perhaps I should be more specific. Perhaps you want to hear about why I was sent in to take out Cloud Strife, and why no one ever knew why I failed, or that I'd even tried to carry out the hit in the first place. As far as the citizens of the continents knew, I didn't even exist. Everything began a while ago, and I haven't looked back since. As if I could.
The first time I met Remnant, on a cold evening in Wall Mart, I was tempted to leave him sitting at the bar for the rest of the evening. He looked ridiculously out of place in his two piece suit, and had that looked about him that suggested previous experience with the Turks.Always good news if you're looking for a reliable client.
The man had greeted me with caution, and never made any effort to give me an incentive…
'I'm Charles Remnant,' Was the greeting I got when I took a seat next to him. He spoke in a low, gruff voice, and stared dead ahead at the drinks cabinet across the counter, instead of turning his head to see me. I played along.
'Kona Khan,' I replied, sliding a menu towards me and taking a look at the day's choice of drinks. There wasn't much on offer, so I got down to business.
'You contacted me earlier when I was out…working…at Sector Five,' I mused, after waving away the waitress discreetly.
Remnant chuckled.
'Working…huh. You're idea of work is taking out a six foot builder from Gonaga? Shit. Maybe I should get hold of someone a little less rough,'
'No need,' I said, looking over at him, 'Now, what do you have for me, Mr Remnant? Robbery?'
Remnant grinned, and for a moment he resembled a shark.
'No, Mr Khan, Shinra Corp. doesn't employ common criminals, we occasionally hire mercenaries and contract killers to do work on rare occasions,'
'Is this a rare occasion, Remnant
There was a pause, then he grinned again.
'Yes,'
I watched with mild interest as the head-hunter took a small file out of his pocket and slid it across the table. Then, standing up quickly, he paid the waitress, who seemed slightly reluctant to approach us, and looked down at me.
'Read it. Get on with the job. Don't screw up.'
And then he was gone.
