I see a lot of Amy being a jealous brat in stories where Sonic starts dating someone else, but I prefer to think better of her. And I could give reasons for a while, but that's the origin of this piece. (It's safe to assume, unless stated otherwise, that in any of my stories where Sonic is with someone, Amy had a moment along this line.)

Amy gazed listlessly out the window. The garden was very pretty on days like today, late enough in the year for the flowers to be in full bloom, golden sunlight falling over them and warming their vibrant colors that much more. It didn't help her state of mind at all.

She'd been staying at Vanilla's house for the past few days, officially on vacation for an unknown length of time, starting the day before she'd actually left. She needed to sort her emotions before she could return home.

A few days previous, an interesting news story had made headlines. Security cameras had received widespread upgrades since Shadow's appearance, now able to record at much faster speeds in the event of yet another high-speed imposter. So it made sense that, with all the recordings of Sonic and Shadow's most recent run through town, someone would notice the pair holding hands.

As soon as she'd heard the news, Amy had called Vanilla and come over. She knew the reaction expected of her, but she was mature enough to resolve not to throw a fit. She just wasn't sure she could stick to that resolution if she saw Sonic or Shadow.

She sighed, letting her weight sink further into the pillows. She still loved Sonic, like nothing else in the world. He'd always been The One to her. They would marry, have kids, and grow old together. She'd always known that in her heart.

But her head reminded her that she'd also always known that it couldn't work out that way.

One of the things she loved most was his devotion to freedom, his simple wish to run forever. And she'd always known that to win his heart, she would have to keep up with him. She'd promised herself to never give up, to keep running until she caught up. But she couldn't run forever.

Then there was Shadow, the one person who could actually match Sonic's speed. In retrospect, it made sense that Sonic would find a partner in him, another wandering soul like himself. She'd just assumed at first that Shadow's inner darkness was too different from Sonic's shining personality for them to ever really connect.

Perhaps it was for the best that she'd been wrong. On the one hand, her tenacity might have paid off, convinced Sonic to properly date her. On the other, it wouldn't be a relationship he could ever be truly happy in, and she couldn't really be happy either.

She had to remind herself that no, she really couldn't run forever. Even if she would swear it in a desperate attempt at keeping him, she knew it would be a lie, and he was never really hers in the first place.

But, even as she despaired over the loss of her beautiful dream, she knew that Sonic was happy now. And if she really loved him, she knew she had to let him be with the one who could make him happy.

She scrubbed at the tears that had built up without her noticing, blinking away the last of the moisture as a new resolve took hold of her. She might not be the one Sonic gave his heart to, but she could still support him from the sidelines.

After all, she loved him. And when you love someone, you can do anything for them.

Even if it means letting go.
