Connie walked quickly to her next class. Fourth period, French, the best time of the day. There were multiple reasons why she loved her class. The language was fun to learn, her teacher was the nicest ever, and Jeff, a friend of hers, was in the class too. Given the fact that she was taking French early, and as an elective, she had not expected for someone she knew to be in the class too, and she was very happy because of it. She also loved the fact that every day, her lovely teacher would write a simple fun fact about the French language or culture on her whiteboard.

She finally reached the classroom and opened the door, walking down the rows of desks and waving lightly to Jeff, who sat on the far right, two desks from the front. As she sat down at her desk and grabbed her notebook, paper, and pencils from her bag, she looked up to the whiteboard. There, at the very top, in neat half-cursive handwriting was the date, and below that, a "fun fact". Connie quickly scanned the words, and gasped to herself as the bell rung and her teacher started the class. Throughout the rest of the period; throughout the rest of the day even; her mind was thinking about that simple little sentence that she had read on her teacher's whiteboard. And this is what it had said:

Jam is one word that people are not quite sure of the origin. However, some people speculate that it stems from j'aime, which means "to love" in French.

She had immediately thought of Jam Buds. And when she got home, she debated how odd it would be for her to immediately race to Steven. Finally, after half an hour of pretending to do her homework, she decided to go, leaping off her bedroom floor and sprinting out of the house to call to Lion, who had been staying with her recently.

In a matter of seconds, she was at the gems' house, racing up the steps to the porch and knocking hurriedly on the door.

"Yes? Oh, Connie! What's the matter?" Pearl answered the door.

"Nothing! Could I talk to Steven?" Connie answered hurriedly.

"Oh!" Pearl's surprised expression didn't leave her face, but she nodded nonetheless. "Yes, yes. I'll go get him."

Connie stood at the door for a few seconds more before her best friend came rushing out. "Connie! I didn't know you were coming over."

His grin was large, and she could not help but mirror it. "I wasn't going to, but I learned this cool thing in class today, and I couldn't wait to tell you."

They both walked down the steps to the porch and out along the beach as Connie talked about her day. "So in French class, my teacher always puts up a neat fun fact about the French language or culture."

"Oh, cool!" Steven echoed her enthusiasm.

"Yeah, I know! Well, today, when I came in, on the board it said that the word jam probably came from the French 'j'aime', which means 'to love'!"

Steven's face lit up in delight. "Oh, that's so sweet!"

Connie nodded as she slowed down to face him. "Yeah! I thought that was so cool, because we're jam buds! And well, I also thought it was really fitting because, well…" she trailed off, looking to the side, a slight blush growing on her cheeks. Then she faced her friend again. "Well, because I love you, Steven!"

Steven's face flashed surprise for a moment, before his smile returned, wide and joyful. "I love you too, Connie!"

And with that, the two laughed and hugged each other tightly, silhouetted in the lowering light from the sun which stretched out across the ocean towards them.

A/N: Hullo! This is just a really quick little drabble based off of a fun fact in a cookbook I was looking through. I thought it fit the characters nicely. Also, I never specifically say, but Connie's supposed to be a bit older; maybe in eighth grade. And you can take the final part as romantic love or a very strong friendship; your choice. Either way, I hope you like it! Mainly I just wanted to write something for a fandom besides ML.
