"This is the last time we'll be seeing each other, eh?" With the sun shining down on them, Harima could see the teardrops forming on the brink of Tenma's huge brown eyes as she asked him. He ruffled her hair and with a sad smile drawn on his face, tried his best to come up with words that could at least alleviate the pain she was feeling: "Don't be silly. It's not like I'm going to die. You're not going to die, right?"
She nodded.
"Then," he continued, "You'll be here when I come back." His hands were shaking as he hid them behind his back. He was keeping himself from breaking down. In less than 5 minutes, a decade will separate him from her. From her warmth, the sight of her beautiful face, her caring smile and her love.
"Tenma," he spoke of her name, "I cannot tell that our future will be as clear as the sky, but no matter how blurry or vague it may turn out to be, I will always return to where your arms are."
She punched the side of his arm. "You silly guy, still saying cheesy stuff in moments like this.."
After that, a few moments were spent on pure silence. No one could utter a word to each other. They couldn't even look at one another in the eyes. They bowed their heads down, looking intently on their feet and on the floor, unsure of what to say.
It surely was no time to rejoice, for it was an event of separation. The plane will soon land and take him to his destination, away from she is. The reality could not be taken for granted. They had to keep their feelings strong. 10 years is simply no joke, and although there are various ways of communicating with each other, nothing of it can beat the magic brought by warm human contact.
He knows deep inside him that he may go to a thousand places and she may meet a thousand people, their hearts would still beat as one. Something as petty as distance could not break the bond they shared apart.
The announcement came. Both of them heard that the plane has arrived. The time for parting has come as well. He was surprised when he felt something reached for his shoulder. It was her hand. He could not help but look at her. This time, it was evident that she was crying silently. Her eyes had gone watery, her cheeks stained with tears, but she still managed to give that sweet smile to him.
Her face came closer to his, and her mouth near his ear. "No foolish goodbyes." She whispered.
With that, she let go of me and motioned for me to hurry. The time felt so fast to me! The next minute I was dashing towards the entrance, and looking back at her for the last time, I could see her waving at me, smiling ever so sweetly.
I will really come back.
