They first met in a dream. David's dream. But after everything that happened with him, David didn't know what was real anymore. He had been locked away for so long in his own mind that he always questioned if he was really here.

But somehow, someway, he knew this was real. That Danny was real and not something his mind conjured up. That face looked real, genuine, and David just wanted to run and greet the other man. His friend. The man with the Iron Fist.

But what if it was the mutant? He couldn't risk letting it control him anymore. So, he walked away, ignoring the hammer in his heart. This was for the best. Danny wasn't here, not really. It was it.

"Hey!" Danny ran up to him. His hair was a mess and he held onto his chest, trying to catch his breath. David tried to suppress the powers rising up in him. He was ready to take it down, if he had to, even if that destroyed him in the process. "David? You're David? I didn't think you were real."

David looked at him warily. "Yes," he answered, short and clip, attempting to see beneath the mask it wore. He never could see it clearly. That was why it controlled him since he was born.

"Oh, of course, you are!" Danny's face brightened. "Don't you remember me? Danny? From our dreams? It's okay if you don't, but it's great to finally meet you in person."

"I-" He looked around, trying to get little glimpses and clues, to see if this was really Danny or it. "Is it really you, Danny?" he asked hopeful, knowing well how it wore masks.

"Yeah, man, it's me." Danny smiled. "Wanna grab coffee?"

David was still wary of everything, but against his better judgement, he found himself agreeing. "Okay."

Maybe it was it after all. Maybe it was really Danny. All David knew was that he was getting coffee with a perfectly random stranger. They had only met in their dreams, after all, and that was not something that can be trusted.
