phantasmal

He could feel his heartbeat pounding behind forgotten places—his eyelids, the pit of his stomach, the back of his knees (or was that just his shaking, whole tremors rocking his body and making his legs turn to jelly as he collapsed—)

The firebender found himself trapped in the intense blue of her eyes, the sparkling, dancing, laughing blue that always nudged his lips into an involuntary smile (except he wasn't smiling now, because all he could think about was why that blue seemed so cold, so frozen—)

In their relationship, there was never a handsome prince or a damsel in distress to be saved—there was never an ugly turtleduck or a courageous hero or a princely zebra-frog or a froglike prince or a bearded sorcerer—no, for them, there was only a level-headed, brooding street urchin turned pro-bender, and a hot-blooded, naïve human incarnation of the spirit of the planet. There wasn't a fantasy, a story, an illusion—only, he thought, a happy ending (because once you smile and kiss and twirl around in the snow, you have become a happy ending.)

Suddenly, for a single, teetering moment, the blue of her eyes collapsed and melted and breathed, a gasp stuttering in her chest. "Mako?"

He was gripping her shoulders now, blind to her ravaged clothes (blood was everywhere), and the heartbeat pounding in his ears almost drowned out her faint voice but he replied, not loud enough (his lips were cracked and his throat dry)—"Korra!"

Her voice was so quiet and strained and it scared him (she was always so loud) but she managed to smile and the blue shimmered a little (was she crying?) as she managed, "I'm glad you're here."

And she was his happy ending even as the blue of her eyes froze again (and maybe they weren't a story or a fantasy or an illusion, but that didn't stop him from chasing a dream.)

Although I admit that I'm not the biggest fan of this pairing, I've decided to take part in Makorra Week 2012. This drabble was for day one's prompt - fantasy. I'm not too happy with how this drabble turned out, but I hope you at least somewhat enjoyed it. Feedback would be appreciated.
