It had started out as a relatively ok day for Bella, Charlie had gotten up early to salt the driveway, so she would not land on her ass on the ice first thing this morning and Edward was fresh back from hunting with his family. After the trauma of the past few months she was more than happy to be enveloped in the joy of the little things like her driveway being ice free and her boyfriend returning from a family trip. She had nearly lost Edward, it had put everything into perspective for her… The Volturi were putting pressure on the Cullen's to turn her, she knew this, and it frustrated her. If Edward had just turned her back in Italy, they would have been done with them a long time ago! He keeps promising her he will turn her after college, but she finds it harder and harder to believe him every day.

She was so engrossed in her thoughts that she jumped slightly in the passenger seat of Edwards crisp clean Volvo at the sound of his amused chuckle.

"Thinking about something very intense, are we?"

His velvety smooth voice said as he shook his head lightly at her. She always slept over in the Cullen's the day after the came back from a hunt, it has become part of the routine by now. Even Charlie knew not to expect her home after the Cullen's returned from their 'camping trip'.

"Sorry, just thinking about college stuff…" She sighed, it was times like this she was happy Edward could not read her mind as she knew he would be more than unhappy with what her thoughts had to say. He seemed a lot more at ease since she agreed to wait until after college to be turned. He appeared to be totally oblivious to how evidently unhappy and morose it was making her.

As they pulled up the gravelled path to the Cullen's home Edwards entire demeanour changed. He stiffened and sat up straighter in his seat, he inhaled the air and a low irritated growl emitted from his lips. Immediately Bella's heart began beating out of her chest at a pace so fast she was almost certain she was going to go into cardiac arrest.

"I smell a mutt… More than one to be exact." Edward said darkly.

A mutt? Jacob was here? This automatically made her feel hit with a level of relief that she could not fathom, relief followed by irritation. He was not allowed step onto vampire turf like that, why did he want to cause her such trouble after all she had already been through, she could not risk losing the Cullen's again because her friend cannot keep his distance.

They both left the car Edward walking a few protective steps ahead of Bella, she was startled to see not only Jacob there but Sam too… This was not a casual drop by. Something was wrong.

"Sam, you are breaking the rules by being on my family's property." Edward said in the most forced polite voice he could muster.

"Edward, I wouldn't come if it wasn't serious. May we come in." He said holding up his hands in a manner that showed he meant no harm. Jacobs stance told a different story. He stood rigid, his hands balled up into fists and his jaw clenched tight.

"Jake?"

Bella asked inquisitively but he did not answer. After a few tense moments of silence Edward produced his key and allowed them inside.

"No one is home, Carlisle is probably the one you want to talk to, but he is still at the hospital. You could come back later to see him." Edward said almost dismissively to the two wolves.

"Carlisle is the reason we are here leech." Jacob retorted.

"Jacob! I said you could accompany me on the condition you keep that mouth of yours shut!" Sam snapped angrily causing Jacob to lower his head in both annoyance and embarrassment.

Her concern was rising, she could feel her face get redder and redder. She was reasoning with herself that the discussion they were about to have would not be that bad if it was regarding Carlisle, Carlisle was the kindest sweetest man she had ever met. This surely would turn out to be an overreaction.

"Edward, roughly how old is Carlisle?" Sam sighed.

"About 380 years old, why?" Edward asked suspiciously.

"Are you sure?"

"Sam, this is ridiculous what does Carlisle's age have to do with you and this runt of the litter trespassing onto our turf?"

"You better sit down." Sam said taking a seat on one of the Cullen's plush couches himself.

"Some of the Clearwater's just came back from a vacation in Norway. They like to wolf out and run through the parts of the Norse wilderness people don't tread on. While they were out on a midnight run, they ran into two unsavoury characters. Two vamps to be exact. But not like you. Their eyes were not red, their eyes were not amber. They looked like a human's eyes just… Brighter. And they did not smell like regular vampires, they were older. Much older, they didn't even come up on their radar. They didn't even try to attack them. Apparently, they seemed confused to see anyone in the area more than anything… They got talking. The two of them seemed interested in seeing a pack, it had everyone freaked how… Chill they were. It was only when they mentioned the name Forks that they perked up. Started talking about having family in Forks. Started asking all kinds of questions." Sam said looking intently at Edward to gauge his reaction.

Bella could see that this news had changed Edwards demeanour from inconvenienced to concerned. The vampires Sam was describing sounded nothing like the Cullen's, they sounded nothing like any vampire she had ever seen. Her heart began to race once more… This was bad.

"They were not very forthcoming on information on themselves, wouldn't even give the guys a name. They seemed pretty wild still, they were all but living amongst the trees. When they came home from their trip this morning there was a letter waiting for them in the mail. A letter I am pretty sure was intended for your eyes more than our own."

Sam produced a scroll, it had been secured shut with a red wax seal, a red wax seal with the mark of the volturi upon it. Bella's heart sank. Their pursuit of them had continued. Just when she thought they had caught a break, a small vacation from the madness that was their lives, the stone in their shoe that was the Volturi had once again returned.

Edward steadily unravelled the scroll and tilted it slightly, so Bella could also see it.

It read:

Dear primitive beings,

It has come to the attention of the Volturi that you crossed paths with some of our dearest oldest cousins. Our intelligence has informed us that our cousins were generous hosts during your visit and outlined a link to one of our most beloved covens, the Cullens. This information has shocked us deeply as the oldest member of the Cullen coven is not yet even 400 years old. Such a link should be impossible to such old souls. Thanks to your brief encounter we have been able to reveal that the Cullen Coven have been feeding us inaccurate time line information on where and when they were turned. The Volturi would like to thank you for had you not gone for a wander on that particular land we would have been none the wiser. We would like to express our intention to pass through your lands to meet with the Cullens to discuss this matter further and give the appropriate penalties for giving false information. We will mean your pack no harm and intend to merely pass through peacefully. Once again, we thank you for your cooperation during these proceedings.

Warmest Regards

Aro

Bella's blood ran cold, they were coming to Forks. The volturi were coming to Forks.

"This is serious Edward, having that many vampires in one area is going to lead to trouble, especially when it comes to the Volturi." Sam said looking Edward dead in the eye his hands shaking ever so slightly.

"Everyone felt like they were getting watched from the moment they got on the plane, the pack don't need to be under blood sucker surveillance just because you pissed off the big guns." Jake said venom dripping from every word.

Bella waited for Edward to scold him, but he did not. In fact, Edward had barely said a word.

"Edward?" She asked placing a hand on his cold hard forearm.

"We will take care of it Sam, I am sorry this has happened. We had no idea the Volturi had people tailing the pack. I will call Carlisle right away. He will come and see you tonight." Edward finally said in little more than a whisper.

"Well see that he does Edward, if this continues, I will see that our treaty is null and void." Sam said rising to his feet all but dragging Jacob along with him to the front door.

Edward did not get up to see them off, he did not even look at them when they left.

"Edward, what is going on?" Bella finally asked unable to take the silent tension in the room a moment longer.

"I need to go to the hospital. I need to talk to Carlisle." He said rising to his feet with steely determination.

"No! Not until you tell me what is going on. Carlisle is too young to be mixed up in this mess. Even Aro said so in the letter, this is just a mistake. An excuse for the volturi to come after us!" She reasoned with him.

"No… No, it's not… It's true."

"Excuse me?"

"Carlisle lied to the Volturi when they took him in, he lied to protect some people. He isn't too young."

"Well how old is he?"

"Old enough."

"How old Edward!"

"I don't know Bella, old enough!" He suddenly shouted at her causing her to jump. He never raised his voice at her. Never. He seemed not even apologetic when he took a moment to compose himself. His eyes were black, his bronzed hair was flying in every direction possible from him anxiously running his fingers through it. He knew this secret and he never told her. What else had he kept from her?

"I am taking you home then I am going to Carlisle, this is nothing to concern you." He grumbled grabbing his car keys.

"Nothing to concern me? They are coming here because of me can't you see that?!" Bella shouted her hands balling into fists.

Edward looked at her in a way she had never seen before, almost like she was exasperating him…

"Bella, not every bad thing that happens in this family is about you. This is a matter outside of us. It is a matter bigger than us."

"Is that so? Then what is it? Such a big secret you couldn't share it with me? The person you are planning on spending eternity with?"

"I did not want to scare you with the truth. But perhaps it is time you heard it. Maybe it would stop you living in this fantasy world about becoming a vampire… Perhaps it would finally open your eyes to the reality of what this infliction is." He said his eyes narrowing. The way he was speaking to her was like a dagger through her heart. She could feel her eyes well with tears, but she refused to let them fall, she would stand her ground.

"I doubt that very much, in fact I am confident there is nothing you could do or say that would change my mind." She said through her teeth.

"Is that so? Fine, get in the car."

"Where are we going?"

"To the hospital, it's about time you realise what it truly is going to take to be a Cullen."

/ Ok so I have HUGE plans for this tale. Please note it is going to be SO DARK compared to the original story. This will be a lot more blood and gore. It will be a lit more of vampires being vampires so buckle in for that. A lot of skeletons are about to fall out of the Cullens closet and a trip to Norway with Charlie and Jacob in tow is on the cards! Stay tuned lads and lassies! PS, let me know if you like it, let me know if you hate it. A girls gotta know.
