It wasn't that Niou was bad at Maths or anything. In fact, he was often told by teachers that it was one of his best subjects, and that he should pursue a career that required a lot of mathematical thinking, like engineering.
But there were times there were equations he couldn't solve. And during those times he would mull over the problems, sulking because he couldn't answer them, and yet he refused to ask anyone for help because his pride didn't allow it.
It irritated him because he couldn't ask anyone when he had trouble and acknowledging the very fact that he had trouble to begin with aggravated him even more. He noticed this habit he was forming, to withdraw during times like these. But there was another person who had recognised Niou's behaviour, and he felt quite pleased about it.
That was because Yagyuu Hiroshi had no difficulty in any subject, which included Maths. He knew it pained Niou when there were equations he couldn't find solutions for, and he took the liberty of approaching the younger boy about it, even though he knew he would be rejected because of Niou's pride. But with a bit of gentle coaxing on his part, Niou would eventually accept his offer, albeit grudgingly.
Grudgingly not only because his pride was wounded, but because Yagyuu took the liberty of teaching him from behind. He would lean over and encircle his arms around Niou's neck, effectively trapping him with his long arms. His left hand often found a resting place on Niou's left hand, while he used his right hand to diligently print numbers on to the page.
His breath always felt warm on Niou's neck, and Niou was positive Yagyuu could see him visibly shudder every time Yagyuu spoke in low tones into his ear.
This, Niou knew, was Yagyuu's favourite bit about teaching him. He knew Yagyuu couldn't give a damn about what the question was, or whether Niou's pride suffered injuries or not.
And, Niou realised, over the course of time it had become to be his own favourite bit as well. Maths equations, solutions and his pride didn't seem to be that important any more. It was okay if he couldn't answer a particular question, or if he had to accept Yagyuu's assistance, because the occasional kisses and sweet nothings whispered in his ear was definitely worth it.
