Li's basement was the best part of his house. His brother, Yong-Soo, had worked with him to convince Yao to let them take it over since no one used it, and they had done a good job. At least, Emil thought so. He liked to go over to Li's house and sit in the basement with him and play video games or watch movies or whatever they were in the mood for. Today it was an anime marathon.
Li had been surprised when he heard Emil had never watched anime before so he took it upon himself to fix that. They started with something everyone knew: Attack on Titan. Of course they didn't get far before Emil started going off about how it didn't make any sense at all and that there's no way the titans could've just come out of no where like that.
"It's anime, Emil," Li sighed, "It doesn't have to make sense."
"I just think they should have more explanation."
"Just watch it, okay?"
Emil grumbled but quieted down, leaning into the couch. When the episode ended he just kept staring forward. "Are you okay?" Li asked, noticing his apparent trance.
"Why'd they have to kill off the mom?"
"I don't know," He shrugged, "It's just part of the story. But did you like it?"
Emil thought for a moment then said, "Yeah, it was good."
"Do you want to watch the next episode?"
"My heart says yes but the clock says no."
"Oh," Li frowned, "What time is it?"
Emil pulled his cell phone out of his pocket and looked at the screen, "5:30. My brother's going to kill me if I miss dinner."
"I can walk you home."
Emil looked up, "That sounds good."
They walked silently, unconsciously drifting closer to one another. They moved too slowly, the sun was mostly set by the time Emil's house came into view. "I'll go the rest of the way on my own," Emil said as the reached the corner three houses down from his, "You know Lukas doesn't like you."
"Okay," Li responded, a little sadly, "I'll see you tomorrow then?"
"Definitely."
Neither of the boys moved from where they were standing. They just stood facing each other, eyes on the ground. After a few long moments, Emil lifted his head. Li's brown hair partially obscured his face and his dark eyes were hardly visible. Before he could stop himself he leaned forward and planted a quick, shy kiss on the boy's lips. When Li looked up to respond, Emil was already halfway down the street. Both their faces burned red, both were smiling the widest they ever had.
That was two months ago, and no one knew it had happened but them.
