Hello my readers.
Hardening of the Heart is a story about Zakuro's origins, childhood and adolescence incorporating her past shown in the anime.
The idea of Zakuro being a modern noble/aristocrat came about when I learnt the Fujiwara family (in real life) was a dynastic family that dominated the Japanese imperial government from the 9th to the 12th century.
Discliamer: I do not own Tokyo Mew Mew. All characters are fictional.
The little girl sat up straight trying to avert the drowse that was relentlessly pulling her body down. She looked around her, the night's omnipresent darkness caused her eyes to ache more. The still atmosphere shattered as loud gasp escaped her lips.
Hot, fat tears rolled down her cheeks as her body racked with sobs which escalated into wails.
"Mama! Papa!" she cried out, despite knowing they were nowhere in an earshot.
"Shut up!" she heard her neighbour shout. "It's the middle of the night!"
She put her hand over her mouth, vainly trying to silence herself. She turned over and planted her face into her pillow continuing her howling. After a few minutes her wails were reduced to whimpering and sniffing.
"Mama said only babies cry," Zakuro recited "I'm not a baby, I'm six…"
Zakuro clung to her father as he whispered a "goodbye" in her tiny ear. She wailed as her mother pried her away from the kneeling man. They both waved goodbye as he solemnly walked down the driveway to the awaiting taxi. Zakuro blinked away her tears watching as the car took off down the road.
"Zakuro stop this silly wailing," her mother said sharply. "You're not a baby are you?"
Though the memory had become blurred with each passing year, the question "You're not a baby are you?" stayed imperative in her young mind.
"Maybe I am being a baby," Zakuro whispered bitterly to herself. "Papa has an important job, Mama ignores me when I ask her why she has to go too, but she still leaves food for me and she told me how to take of myself,"
Her lament had proven to drain what little energy she had ,as she felt her body relax and her eyelids grow heavy.
"And it's not like this hasn't happened before…."
