THIS IS IT
Death. Just a simple word that comes by so easily to us. You could die in a war or a car crash ,hell, you could even die by choking on pudding. Most want to die peacefully, in their sleep, or die an hero in the midst of a war. Think again people. Sure it happens a lot but what about the people that don't die hero's or in oblivious calm. Do they suffer? Is it painful? Do they regret things? And then comes the big one. Do they die in vain?
This is it.
It was raining. Just like that unforgettable day. Two friends, Two enemies, Two brothers. Just standing, falling, dying in the rain. The flat barren land was smeared with blood and there was silence. A deafening silence that rang in their ears. Naruto breathed heavily, his shredded jacket in ruins. Sasuke lay across him, facing the opposite side. Polar opposites, in fact.
"Teme" rasped Naruto through the droplets of water.
"Hn?" whispered the raven haired Uchiha.
"Are you gonna die?"
Naruto couldn't help but ask the childish question.
Sasuke couldn't help but smile a little.
"Yes."
"Does it hurt?"
Naruto winced a little at how much he sounded like a kid. Again.
Sasuke's smile grew wider.
"No"
"…why?"
Sasuke turned his head to the side, his vision split between the scarred ground and the stormy gray sky that never seemed to stop pouring. He pondered for awhile. Why? He really didn't know. He'd done his life's mission. He'd fulfilled his purpose.
"I don't know" Sasuke answered.
Naruto sighed.
"I wonder what would have happened if things like this hadn't happened."
"Me too."
"Maybe we'd be back in Konoha right now…"
Sasuke nodded.
Naruto continued.
"…and maybe i'd be eating ramen. Or training with you and Sakura-chan…"
Naruto raised a hand and turned it over to look at the cuts and scrapes.
Sasuke felt a soft pull in his gut.
"…and Kakashi-sensei would be reading his perverted book again…"
"Hn" Sasuke smirked.
"…and you'd be ignoring us…and Sakura-chan would be yelling at me…cause that's what she does best…"
Naruto lowered his hand.
"…and then maybe we'd see Hinata…or Neji, or Tenten, or Shino, or Lee, or Kiba, or Shikamaru, or Ino, or Chouji…"
Sasuke flinched at the mention of the Konoha 12. They'd been his friends…right? They'd promised to bring him down. Only because he went down the wrong path. Too far down that said path.
"…and we'd all be happy…and baa-san would be screaming for us to go on missions…but it'd be like it used to…"
Naruto said that even if he knew things would never be like they used to.
Sasuke knew too.
"..but if we hadn't gone through all this shit…then I wouldn't be friends with Gaara…you wouldn't have learned the truth…"
Itachi.
"…and me and Sakura-chan wouldn't have gotten stronger…"
Sasuke looked up and his onyx eyes glazed over at what his life could have been.
"…we're closer than we ever were before…because you're the family never had…and pervy sage…and Kakashi-sensei…and Sakura-chan…and Iruka-sensei…and even if we fought…we're still friends…right, Teme?..."
Silence.
Naruto frowned.
"Teme?" he asked, hesitantly.
Silence.
Using the last of his strength he rolled over to look at the Uchiha. Sasuke's features had settled into an even mask and for once the troubled shinobi look at peace. A small smile played at the edges of his lips and one arm was bent behind his head, two fingers lifelessly falling from the other three that were curled. A gesture of friendship. Naruto reached over and gripped his own fore and middle finger with his best friends. It looked almost a like a promise. A broken one but still a promise.
Teme
