The red numbers of Seeley Booth's alarm clock pierced through the early morning darkness, uncaringly declaring the early hour at which he had arisen. But the time wasn't what mattered. All that mattered to him was the body of warmth snuggled next to him, her head resting on his chest as it slowly rose and fell with each breath. Two years ago, he could never even have imagined that he could have even befriended her, much less be lying next to her savoring her presence; her warmth; even the scent of her which he had memorized so well. She's a fighter, but when you peel away the gruff exterior, a truly loving, caring woman is revealed. But perhaps that is why he had become so enthralled with her. She argued with him; challenged him. Even that was more than he could ever say for Cam or the series of revolving door girlfriends he had in the past. And with these arguments came an endlessly more intimate understanding of each other's minds and their most intricate workings. With this growing knowledge of the other's most personal thoughts and secrets came the most important factor of their relationship: trust. When they had first been paired, he could tell from the moment he met her that she was a broken person with emotional barriers as thick as the Great Wall, and just as intricately crafted. But as they grew closer, the barriers came down one by one until she had made herself vulnerable to him, just as he had become to her. They shared some of the most intimate emotional moments together – the tears of pain; the joy of love; the passion of lust – and he would trade these moments for nothing else in the world. For the first time, he felt complete; as if for his entire life he had been searching for his other half, and had finally found it within the most unlikely of beings.
He lowered his head and kissed her hair lightly, taking in her scent and gazing softly at her peaceful features. "Thank you, Bones." he murmured under his breath. His fingers lightly stroked her arm as he pulled her nearer to him, not able to be close enough to her, the woman he loved so much. He closed his eyes and took a slow, deep breath, savoring the moment one last time as drowsiness again overtook him. Just as he was submitting to the inevitable sleep that awaited him, he whispered three last words into her hair; and though she would not hear, she knew.
"I love you."
