Luffy made an odd keening sound, which distracted Zoro from his midmorning nap. He opened one bleary eye to see the rubber boy laying on his back, scooting awkwardly across the deck.
"You'll get splinters like that," Zoro said offhandedly, his voice gruff with grogginess.
There was another frustrated wail from the captain, sounding something like, "But it itches!"
Zoro snorted "Your back itches again?"
"Yeah... Mou, I tried scratching it against the galley door frame, but Sanji told me to shed my fleas elsewhere. Do I have fleas, Zoro?"
"Geez, I hope you don't." Making a face, the first mate made a mental note to make sure Chopper was checked later.
Managing to scoot himself beside Zoro, Luffy looked to him with a pathetic pout. "I tried scratching against the mast, but that didn't work. I borrowed Usopp's back scratcher, and that didn't work either. I thought the deck might work, but nope, my back still itches so bad, Zoro, what else can I doooooooo?" Another miserable whine ran Luffy's words into one big sentence.
Sitting up straight and tucking his legs under himself Indian style, the swordsman made a vague beckoning gesture. "Come here," he grumbled, lamenting his ruined nap. At least he figured the faster he could get Luffy quieted down, the sooner he could go back to his sleep.
Plunking down in front of Zoro, his back to his first mate, Luffy hunched forward to present the offending area. "Scratch, please. Everywhere." And Zoro did. He started from Luffy's shoulders and made his way down to waistband of his jeans before working his way back up. He scratched in circles and zigzags, long scraps and short grazes.
Through it all, Luffy made pleased sounds and he squirmed around. By the time Zoro's hands were tired, Luffy had gone from sitting in front of Zoro to laying on his stomach across Zoro's lap, his straw hat and shirt having been flung off somewhere in between. Luffy's back was red, but he did not seem to mind as he sprawled where he lay like happy, rubber boy mush.
"You gonna move anytime soon?" Zoro growled, shifting his legs to see if he could find a more comfortable position.
"No way," Luffy sighed, a happy smile on his now sleepy face. "Zoro's got comfy legs."
"T'ch... idiot," Zoro muttered, hoping the redness he was feeling in his face was not showing as he leaned back against the rail. Closing his eyes, the swordsman hoped he would be comfortable enough as he was without getting a cramp while sleeping.
"Ne, Zoro..." Luffy whispered. Before Zoro could open his eyes, he felt Luffy shift on his lap. Two arms wrapped around his waist and the captain's face pressed against Zoro's stomach. "Thanks... You've got the best scratch ever!"
With a sigh, all of Zoro's gruffness melted away. He even smiled a little as he ran his fingers through Luffy's dark hair, gently scratching at his scalp. When the rubber boy practically purred in pleasure, the swordsman decided it was not so bad to have Luffy wake him from his nap.
