Preface

One fire burns out another's burning,
One pain is lessen'd by another's anguish.

The pain was incredible.

It was deep, so deep, burning within me, making it hard, so hard to think or breathe or even cry. I wanted death. I needed death.

There was a strange sound, animal, wounded, foreign. It was distant and tinny to my ears, like I was in a tunnel and listening to it from the other end. What kind of creature could make that noise? I wondered, frantic, wishing it would stop. It wasn't natural, didn't sound natural. I couldn't think, why wouldn't the noise stop, I needed to think, there must of been something I could do.

A hand touched my shoulder and I screamed, feral, ugly. The hand pulled back.

"Bella..." The broken whisper was Rosalie. But why was she broken? Why was she broken? I needed to think, I just needed everyone to leave me to think.

That strange sound, the animal sound, it wouldn't stop. Someone needed to stop it, someone needed to make it stop.

"Bella." Rosalie was crying, why was she crying? "Bella... there's nothing you can do."

That strange sound, the animal sound... it got louder, all I could hear and I realized suddenly that I was the one making that noise.

"He's dead, Bella."

I screamed.
