For once in his life, Torak felt safe. The soul eaters were gone and he, Renn and the wolf pack had started their new lives. Slowly he sat up, he glanced across at Renn who appeared to be asleep on the other side of the shelter. He smiled to himself as he crawled out into the fresh morning air. The New Forest was different from the open and deep forest, it had that innocent green colour in the trees that was unlike anything Torak had ever seen. No one had ever lived in the New forest as far as he could tell. This made Torak proud to call it his home.
The sun shone through the trees like arrows as Torak strolled through the carpet of tulips. It looked like he was the first inhabitant of the forest awake. The land descended down into a clearing where a lake slept silently. Not wanting to wake it, Torak crept to the bank and gently dipped his waterskin in. The pure liquid soon filled the hide and Torak, stating his thanks to the lake, crept back again. Now for the berries. He knew Renn loved cloud berries and he and Wolf loved lingon berries so took the time to find a bush of both. Looking down at the bright red skin of a lingon berry he realised that he was ravenous. However he restrained himself from eating more than one. To make it fair Torak picked out a dark red cloud berry and burst it in his mouth to obtain all of its juice. He knew that they still had a lot of dried deer meat from last night so Torak told himself he would go hunting tomorrow.
As Torak wandered through the tulips he sensed that something was stalking him. Placing his hand on his knife hilt he wheeled around, only to be knocked to the ground by a very hungry wolf cub. Pebble was standing over him, a playful look in his eyes. He licked Torak's nose.
"Pack brother."
Torak nibbled his ear and turned his head.
"Are you hungry?"
Pebble yipped with satisfaction as Torak held out a handful of lingon berries, he'd forgotten that they were Pebble's favourites too. From the same way Pebble had come, Wolf and Darkfur padded along and greeted Torak by licking his hand and nosing his knee. Torak buried his face in Wolf's scruff. He asked if they had had luck with their hunting. Wolf placed his paw on Torak's shoulder too say yes. Realising he had been some time, Torak continued through the tulips back to their camp. Now that Wolf was back the feeling of safeness had increased, nothing could endanger them. An ear-splitting scream came from over the hill, it was Renn!
