The Only Exception
When I was younger I saw my daddy cry, and curse at the wind
He broke his own heart and I watched as he tried to reassemble it
And my momma swore that she would never let herself forget
And that was the day that I promised I'd never sing of love, if it does not exist
Natasha sighs and leans her head back on the recliner she sits on. She is trying to sort through the chaos running around in her head, all the love, hatred, bitterness, and resentment.
She refuses to believe she feels anything for him, let alone love.
But she's never known love in her life, so how would she know how she feels anyways? She wouldn't. All she is sure of is that she doesn't want to love him. She doesn't want to love anyone.
You are the only exception
You are the only exception
You are the only exception
You are the only exception
She wants to stop this before it gets too far, but she's afraid that he's already wormed his way through her walls to her heart.
And it scares her. It absolutely terrifies her.
Maybe I know, somewhere, deep in my soul, that love never lasts
And we've got to find other ways to make it alone or keep a straight face
And I've always lived like this, keeping a comfortable distance
And up until now I had sworn to myself that I'm content with loneliness
Because none of it was ever worth the risk
The way he smiles at her, the way he jokes around when she makes a mistake. The way he makes her laugh, the way he holds her when she's about to break down.
She has always been fine with going solo, being on her own. But meeting him has made her realize that maybe she does want someone by her side. And by someone, she really means him.
You are the only exception
You are the only exception
You are the only exception
You are the only exception
But again, she's scared. Scared she'll get her heart broken. Scared he'll leave her when she's old and wrinkly and he still looks young and beautiful.
I've got a tight grip on reality but I can't
Let go of what's in front of me here
I know you're leaving in the morning when you wake up
Leave me with some kind of proof it's not a dream
She'll never believe this is real. Never.
But part of her believes that he does truly love her, and she loves him back. Part of her believes he won't leave her side until her last heartbeat.
That part takes over.
That part supplies her with the bravery to go for it anyways.
So she does.
You are the only exception
You are the only exception
You are the only exception
You are the only exception
