Disclaimer: I don't own them, I'm just borrowing them.

Sometimes an introduction could be life changing. A meeting of two people, that had the potential to change lives forever. Such as the day I met him. I was sitting on the shuttle waiting for the transfer to the Academy. I heard a commotion at the back of the shuttle.

"I don't need a doctor I am a doctor" and I looked round to see someone being dragged out of the toilet.

"Sir if you would just take a seat we can then leave". The man was forced into the seat next to me. With no introduction he spoke to me.

"I may throw up on ya"

"I think these things are pretty safe" I replied.

"Don't pander to me, kid. One tiny crack in the hull and our blood boils in thirteen seconds. Solar flare might crop up, cook us in our seats. And wait'll you're sitting pretty with a case of Andorian shingles, see if you're still so relaxed when your eyeballs are bleeding. Space is disease and danger wrapped in darkness and silence". This bloke was full of the joys of spring.

"Well, I hate to break this to you, but Starfleet operates in space". Thought I'd point out the obvious.

"Yeah. Well, I got nowhere else to go. The ex-wife took the whole damn planet in the divorce. All I got left is my bones".

He offered me a drink from his hip flask, which I gladly accepted as my head was still pounding from last night.

"James T Kirk" I told him my name.

"Leonard McCoy" he told me his.

"You know I don't like Leonard, think I'm gonna call you Bones". He looked at me like I'd grown an extra head. He didn't protest though. And that was it. A simple introduction that changed our lives.

If you'd asked me then if in 5 years time I'd be the Captain of the USS Enterprise, and he'd be the CMO of the same ship, I'd have told you that you were insane.

If you'd asked me then if in 5 years time we'd have been in a relationship for 4 and a half years and that I'd be the Captain of the USS Enterprise, and he'd be the CMO of the same ship, I'd have sent you for a full medical evaluation.

However, here we are, that introduction changed our lives. I'm the Captain of the USS Enterprise, Bones is my Chief Medical Officer, and we've been an item for coming up on 4 and a half years. Life couldn't be better.
