"Come on Evans, just go out with me!" was arguably one of my least favorite sounds in the world. It would follow me everywhere I went. Literally. I heard it on my way to Transfigurations with McGonagall, during the feast in the Great Hall, and hell, most of Gryffindor Tower could tell you what James Potter would scream as I walked up the staircase to my dormitory. But in 7th year, that all changed.
By then, I realized that those eight words were not the only ones in his vocabulary. Spending most of my time with him for Heads duties really opened my eyes up to that. Those little chats we shared while patrolling the halls about the weather and school work eventually evolved into hours of conversation that would leave us to lose track of the time. That's when I learned who the real James Potter was. He wasn't a toerag. He wasn't arrogant. And surprisingly, he was everything I wanted to love in a boy. He was scared of the threat Voldemort had on our world, but he was determined to fight him if it meant the people he loved would be safe. He was fiercely loyal to that charming group of misfits he called the Marauders. He was no longer the annoying git I met on the Hogwarts Express in first year. He wasn't a boy, but a man. A man, to no one's surprise but my own, that I fell in love with.
"Come on Evans, just go out with me" was something I haven't heard since we actually became friends. But those eight words were the ones that I was dying to hear. So, being Lily Evans, I wasn't going to wait for the boy to come to me. I went after him.
I marched into the Great Hall and immediately found James sitting with the Marauders. Before I could second guess myself, I walked over to him and kissed him square on the lips. I could tell I surprised him because at first he didn't move, but then to my relief, he started kissing me back. We were just there in our own bubble of bliss until Sirius started howling and told us to get a room.
"Wha..what was that all about?" asked James. I could feel the blush run to my cheeks and the butterflies fluttering in my stomach.
"Umm..I just thought I'd let you know that I liked you now, that's all."
James' face instantly flushed at my confession and he pulled me into his arms. "Come on Evans" he whispered in my ear, "just go out with me."
"Yeah, I reckon I will Potter" I said. James instantly kissed me again and the entire Great Hall erupted into applause.
"About time" I heard James mumble and I couldn't have agreed more.
This is it. Seven years of bickering, and yelling, and falling in love. It all led up to this.
