Five years later –
"So now if you weren't going to kill the man who killed you mother, why did you go?"
"I think it had to do more so as a closure, now that I look back on it."
"Why did he kill your mother? I mean, I know that it had to do with the last bender that your tribe had but . . ."
"The man killed my mother because she claimed to be the last Waterbender. But in reality it was me."
"Which was why you were so mad at Sokka that day. But you didn't find out until you were there."
"I always had a feeling that it had to do with me, but I didn't know why exactly. So what was my validation. She gave up her life to save me."
"Which is why you take her death more personal than Sokka because in your eyes it was you who should have been killed, not her." She looked away from me. Probably hoping that I could not see the pain or the truth of her feelings in her eyes. "Don't deny it. Look at me." It took her a while, but she did turn around. "I know you, so don't try to deny it. Your mother knew what she was doing. And she would be proud of you right now if she could see you."
"You don't know that."
"Yes, I do. I hear the way your father talks about you mother. And almost everything he says about her, I think of you. And I can always relate it to you. So I know that she would have been proud of you." A few tears started to roll down her cheeks. "Don't ever think that it should have been you. Okay?"
"Okay, thank you."
"'Thank you' for what?"
"For making me feel better."
"You're welcome." I stood up from my chair and took her hand. "Now come on, let's go home."
