Prologue
The traveler's horse picked out the treacherous road to the smuggler's landing he carried the scent of earth with him even after the long travel. Dawn's light gave false interpretations of the path that he rode causing the horse to jolt their precious cargo. The baby slept under a heavy spell for swift traveling and silence so that no one would know what he had done by dusk tomorrow. A slight whistle caused his strangely brown eyes to snap to attention and he saw the sharp blue Scanran eyes that looked into his.
"You have come a long distance friend."
"I'm not going any further, yes I have brought the infant." The woman to whom he spoke stepped out from behind the boulder.
"It is odd that one in your position would show such…tenderness," she brushed her blond hair from her face.
"My own wife has given birth to a son, I believe it is time I rethink my priorities."
"Such faltering could get you killed and it would be hard to replace you."
He carefully drew the infant girl from the sling on his back, "Here, please take her. There is so much suffering in this country and she could have lived a very good life if not for the superstitions that grip us by the throat."
"How poetic," she said icily taking the child, "You realize that suffering is all around you not just in the babes."
"That is why I do my duty to the Crown."
"You're a very loyal servant."
"Rather ironic."
"Yes, farewell."
"No one must know of this," he said turning the horse.
"No one understands that more than I do," she returned covering the child with her shawl.
