An owl flew into my window soundlessly, and landed on my bed post. After a few moments of waiting patiently it made a low hoot, and woke me up. My hair fell silently over my face. As I rose and dressed, the owl poked me continuously until I finally took off the Hogwarts letter it was delivering. It soon flew, off as only ordinary owl, and I tore open my letter with no excitement.
"Mum, my Hogwarts letter is here!" I ripped open the letter to see my new supply list folded inside, along with the prefect's badge. It didn't surprise me seeing it as I had been prefect for the past two years. Somehow my badge was heavier this year, but I didn't glance at it. The supply list was shorter than I had expected. "The new Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher didn't issue any books at all. That is peculiar..."
"What was that, dear?" my mother's voice called from the kitchen, as did the scent of breakfast. I walked towards my mother's voice, waiting to talk until I finally got to the kitchen myself. My mother smiled sweetly at me, in an apron while cooking fresh eggs and bacon.
"My letter is here." I held up my envelope and papers in one hand, and my badge in the other. "My badge is, too."
After a few minutes of cooking my mother looked over at the items in my hands, which were starting to feel more like weights than paper since I had been holding them for so long.. "Did they change the school mascot? Your badge is different."
"How many times must I tell you mother? They aren't mascots! They're houses!" I sighed knowing it was useless anyway, but when I looked at my badge I gasped. It was different from last year. "Mother, I will be down in a bit, going to write something to a friend!" I raced to my room and scribbled something on a sheet of clean parchment:
Dear Harry and Ron-
I am still so very sorry for not being able to make it to your house for the summer, Harry! You know my Mum and Dad wanted me around, and so on and what not. Did you get our letters for Hogwarts? The new Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher doesn't want us to purchase any books! Can you imagine? Well, did one of you get the badge for Head Boy? I made Head Girl! I will see you at Diaigon Alley if you don't send an owl before then!
Hermione Granger
I sealed the letter with a stamp and sent it off with my new owl, Riemann. "Take this directly to Ronald Weasley at the Order of the Phoenix, alright?" The owl made a soft hooting sound than vanished through the window and out of site. I sat on my bed and opened "Hogwarts:A History", reading it for about the nineth time I do believe. I soon set down the book and grabbed my badge and said silently to myself, "Head Girl, Head Girl.."
"Hermione, dear, breakfast!" my mother called as the aroma of cooked food filled my nose once more. I set down my badge carfully and walked down the stairs at a steady pace,
'This is going to be a good year at Hogwarts', I thought as I sat down at the table for my delicious breakfast. Little did I know what monstrous tasks, lies, and secrets lied in my future in the upcoming year at my wizarding school, Hogwarts.
