She hummed to herself as she walked around, sometimes she just needed to get away from the chaos of the guild. Not that she didn't enjoy it, but… it's enough to give a girl a headache, you know? She reached the forest, and, against her habits, decided to walk into it instead of turning back around. It was.. magical, the forest at night. The thin slivers of moonlight shone through the leaves, the fireflies flying in and out of sight. She giggled as one landed momentarily on her cheek, but when she reached for it it flew away. She dropped her bag and started chasing after it, confusing it with others. She felt like a child again, running after fireflies, trying to trap them between her hands.
Completely engrossed in following the firefly, she moved deeper and deeper into the forest. She jumped up and caught the bug, cupping it gently between her hands. She held it up to her face and watched it buzz frantically around. She laughed and opened her hands, letting out a satisfied sigh as it flew away. She sat down and looked around, growing nervous when she realized she didn't know where she was. She stood up and tried to retrace her steps, but everywhere she looked the wind had blown leaves over. She picked a path and decided to follow it. She stumbled through the branches, her foot occasionally catching on a tree root, her clothes snagging on thorns every so often.
A bright light to her left caught her eye, and she ran to investigate. Looking through the leaves she saw a young man sitting at the edge of a pond, surrounded by fireflies. She walked closer cautiously, wondering who he was and why he was there. As she approached she noticed he had startling blond hair, and his build was similar to the dragon slayers' in her guild. The man heard her steps and whipped around.
"Wh-Who are you?" He asked, startled.
"I'm Lucy." She smiled. "And you?"
"...My name's Sting." He replied cautiously.
"Are you new to Magnolia?" She asked. "I haven't seen you around."
"Actually… My cat got away and I'm trying to find him." The man said, ducking his head.
Lucy's eyes softened and she sat next to him.
"I can help you find your cat." She offered.
The man's eyes lit up.
"Really?"
She nodded, and looked out to the water. Suddenly, a gust of wind caressed her neck. She turned around, and saw a red cat floating in midair.
"Lector!" The man explained happily.
"I'm sorry Sting-kun!" The cat wailed. "I just wanted to go see the pretty tree!"
He hugged the cat and told him it was alright.
"If you promise you'll come right back here, you can go ahead." He told the cat.
"I promise Sting-kun! Thank you!" The cat shouted happily as it flew off.
Sting sat back down and relaxed, the fireflies that had flown away when he had moved came back to rest on his shoulders. Lucy watched as they danced around him, her mouth agape. Sting noticed this and laughed, causing Lucy to blush and look away.
"What are you staring at?" He teased.
Lucy turned a deeper shade of red.
"How do you get the fireflies to come near you like that? It took me hours to catch one."
Sting shrugged.
"I'm a light dragon slayer, they're attracted to light." He answered.
"A… dragon slayer did you say?" Lucy asked, taken aback.
But before he had time to answer a red blur came bolting back.
"Sting-kuuuuuuun!" The cat yelled. "I have to show you somethiiiiiing!"
"One minute I'm coming!" He yelled back. "Just have to say goodbye to this lovely lady!"
Lucy looked away and felt her face heat up.
"Hope to catch you around." He said cheeerfully as he left.
"Y-yeah…" She whispered.
Maybe getting lost wasn't the worst thing in the world after all...
