To Live
Somewhere among sloppy kisses and inexperienced touches, Uchiha Sasuke discovered a new reason for his existence. It was a powerful need, more powerful than the need to avenge. It was the need to love and to protect. He had always had the urge to protect his teammates when they were in trouble, but now the urge was stronger, and was directed at a particular one.
He was an avenger. Had always been. The idea of being something quite different from an avenger: a lover was alien to him, and it made him feel vulnerable and weak, especially after the encounter with Gaara, the demon who only loved himself. Gaara had said that the strongest people only loved themselves and fought for themselves, and that was the only way you could be strong. He wanted to be strong because he was an avenger. He had to be strong, because that was the only way he would survive.
But afterwards, when love and warmth greeted him and broke down the cold exterior, and for some brief, blissful moments he forgot the need to avenge, he remembered what he had been told on more than one occasion: that if you had to protect someone precious to you, then you would be filled with strength. And so, these people who had someone important to protect were the strongest.
He realized that it was true. Gaara's words were the ones which were really weakening him.
And somewhere from there, he began to struggle desperately for not only his own survival, but for Uzumaki Naruto's as well.

A/N: I'm not sure if this idea's been written before... As I've said, this is my first Naruto fanfic, and although it came out better than I'd expected, it's still not that good, I think. Constructive criticism will be much appreciated since I would love to know how to improve on my next fanfics. (If I write anymore, that is. xD)
