Flatter me, and I may not believe you.
When Puck tells her that she doesn't need makeup, Sabrina is a little confused. Of course she needs it. He's been telling her she is ugly all this time. She's not naturally pretty. She never thought she was. But that comment makes Sabrina feel good. Like someone actually thinks she is beautiful. But, of course that person is Puck.
Maybe that's why, when he tells her, she is mostly scared.
Criticize me, and I may not like you.
Sabrina doesn't show it, but every time Puck calls her revolting and stupid, it hurts her. Just a little tiny stab at her self-confidence. But those small pinpricks add up into one big blade that hurts like hell.
And it makes Sabrina hate the Trickster King even more.
Ignore me, and I may not forgive you.
Sabrina never forgot the day he went to far.
Puck had ridiculed her for years, called her everything from an airhead to a zeppelin (making fun of her weight), pulled too many practical jokes to count. But the minute he starts seeing a girl from school, it stops. And Sabrina cannot bear it.
So she draws away. And when he comes to her, looking for a friend, she slams the door in his face. Because Sabrina doesn't like to forgive people.
But one day she does.
Encourage me, and I will not forget you.
Everybody wants Sabrina to do well on the SAT. Even Puck.
They all understand how badly she wants to get into Northwestern University. They all excuse her when she forgets to eat dinner; she's studying so hard. They all urge her to read her books and not do the dishes. Puck even helps by quizzing her (even though he doesn't know anything about the material). It is nice to have so much support for once.
Which is maybe why she kisses Puck when they all learn she scored so high.
Love me, and I may be forced to love you. There are many wrong ideas to why Sabrina loves Puck so much.
It's not that he listens to everything she says like it's the most important thing in the world. It's not that he wants to kill anyone who looks at her the wrong way (in his eyes). It's not that he holds her when she cries, even when it's about the most insignificant thing. It's not that he would shout from the rooftops that he loves her so much.
It's when Sabrina's laying on her bed, doing homework and Puck gets home from working at the coffee shop. It's when he bounds up the stairs, two at a time, bursts through her door, jumps on her bed like he's five, wraps his arms around her waist, and kisses her like no tomorrow.
That is why Sabrina loves Puck.
Here is the original quote:
Flatter me, and I may not believe you.
Criticize me, and I may not like you.
Ignore me, and I may not forgive you.
Encourage me, and I will not forget you.
Love me, and I may be forced to love you. – William Arthur Ward
