Kagura flew high over them.
She knew that Sesshomaru knew she was there.
She also knew that Naraku knew where she was...and she was supposed to be following Inuyasha and his friends. She was playing a dangerous game, and if she got too risky, Naraku would kill her.
For the moment, Sesshomaru helped keep her mind off Naraku. She continued to watch him, that hair was that so white, so pure, much like him Yes, Sesshomaru was pure. He was silent, direct, and said nothing unnecessary. There was no mess about him, no disorganization, no miscalculation. For this, above all, Kagura respected him, because Kagura herself was careless; she knew that.
And yet he was a mystery. She believed she knew all these things about him, yet they'd only interacted a few times. She didn't know Sesshomaru, not really. She closed her eyes, shook her head. It was too much to think about, and not the task at hand.
She flew faster and landed some distance ahead of him.
"Yo," she said.
He drew his blade with his only arm.
"I'm not here to fight," she said.
He glared at her, his soft golden eyes focussed and alert.
"I want to talk," she said.
He said nothing, of course.
"I know you don't like me," she said. "And you don't trust me. But what I do know is that we want the same thing."
Silence.
"My goodness, you are frustrating," said Kagura. "You need to say it, Sesshomaru. You need to say what we want, because if I say it, it'll cost me my life."
"You have no life."
She recoiled.
"You are Naraku's puppet. You even smell like him."
Before she could reply, she saw something descend from the sky. It was that preposterous two-headed monster that travelled with Sesshomaru. And riding atop the beast was the even more preposterous Jaken, and that little human girl.
"Lord Sesshomaru!" Jaken screamed as the beast landed. He hopped off and ran to his master's side, leaping about like a moron. "What are you doing here?" he demanded of Kagura.
She ignored him. She glanced at the girl, who sat on the beast, gazing at Kagura with wide, fearful eyes.
"Sesshomaru, you're not stupid," said Kagura.
He sheathed his blade and walked forward.
Kagura whipped out her fan. It was a threat; she didn't want to attack.
Soon he was face-to-face with her. Jaken was shrieking nonsense. Sesshomaru told him to be quiet and placed his hand on the edge of Kagura's fan. He lowered the fan away – she allowed it – and looked into her eyes.
"Kagura."
"Sesshomaru, I—"
"You are a fool."
"You want to be free."
"So do you," she said. "You want to kill Naraku, right? Because he's a threat to her?"
She nodded in the girl's direction.
Sesshomaru's neck tensed visibly.
"Why are you taking care of a human?" Kagura whispered.
He turned and walked away.
At least she got him to say what they both wanted – freedom. To be free of Naraku. Her heart was literally in his grasp, so she had more at stake, but Sesshomaru, too, was a captive of him because he couldn't rest until Naraku was destroyed. And unfortunately, though Sesshomaru was extremely powerful, Kagura doubted he could actually kill Naraku. Because Naraku always had a way…
"Sesshomaru," she shouted, pulling a feather out of her hair. "Remember, you are just as trapped as I am." She flew off into the distance, and called back to him, "Remember!"
