It happened so suddenly…and yet still in slow motion. One moment Clary and Jace were facing down Sebastian and the next Jace was screaming, grabbing at the now bleeding parabatai rune on his collarbone. Jace pulled his hand away, staring at the blood, his normally golden tan skin turning white with horror. Magnus wasn't close enough to hear him when his lips moved but he knew what they said, Alec.

Magnus spun around, his golden eyes searching the battlefield franticly. When he started to run it was more of following a feeling than actually seeing Alec. He could hear Sebastian laughing.

Snapping through one last demon with a whip of blue fire, Magnus looked down and his heart stopped for a moment. He dropped to his knees beside Alec's body, watching the pupils of his eyes dilate, making the bright blue nearly impossible to see. There was so much blood Magnus could barely see the wound in Alec's chest. It looked as if the demon or whatever had given Alec this wound had reached straight into his chest…perhaps trying to pull his heart out? Alec made a strained sound, blood bubbling up in his mouth, drops splattering on Magnus when Alec coughed.

"Shh, don't try to speak darling, just hold on." Magnus placed his hands over Alec's wound, blue sparks starting to fly almost immediately. "Just—just hold on."

"Nn—" More blood bubbled up in Alec's mouth. Sweat broke out on Magnus' bow as he stared at the wound, willing it to close but realizing that it wasn't. His eyes went to Alec's and he saw the sadness and fear in them. The blue sparks stopped and Magnus choked back a sob. He leaned down and placed a kiss to Alec's forehead.

"It's going—it's going to be alright darling…you'll see." He took a deep breath, casting a glance around the battlefield, the fighting had resumed around them. Though he had not cast a spell they seemed to be in their own little protective dome, no one coming close. "I'm so sorry that I wasted those weeks—months—when we could have been together. All because of my stupid need to keep the darkness of my past in the past…I love you Alec…possibly more than I have ever loved anyone else." Magnus paused, his throat tightening. He absently wiped a tear rolling down his cheek away. "When this battle is over we're going to take another trip, one that will be undisturbed, we'll see the other half of the world. You'd like that, right darling?"

Magnus knew that Alec couldn't answer but he could have sworn that Alec relaxed a little. A tiny, almost unnoticeable smile had come to his lips. Magnus took one of Alec's hands, squeezing it between his own. He started talking, of nothing, of the things they would do on their trip, of things they had done. When he finally paused for a breath, Magnus looked down and saw that the light had left Alec's eyes. With shaking fingers Magnus reached out and closed Alec's eyes.

That was it. Alec was gone.
