Near glanced at the calendar hanging from the wall. January 28th, 2011. Exactly one year ago, he'd successfully taken down what is considered the largest mass murder in history. Of course, it hadn't come without its sacrifices and risks, but by some miracle, two of the dearest to him made it through relatively safe.

A goggled redhead sat on the long couch, staring at the television screen, which was currently showing the program, How It's Made. Mello leaned against Matt's shoulder, his feet propped up on the arm of the sofa. Matt hummed. "Hm. Who knew lacross sticks were hand-woven? I thought machines did everything these days."

Near glanced over at the ginger. "Matt, Mello," he said, causing the pair's eyes to flick over to where the albino sat on the floor, stacking dominoes.

"Huh?" Mello mumbled through a mouthful of Snickers.

Near continued, "Do you know what day it is today?" He placed another domino on top of his already large stack.

Matt replied with a lazy, "Uh, Friday?" Mello nodded.

"Well, yes, but I was thinking more along the lines of date."

Mello sighed over-dramatically and sat up on the couch, turned around and squinted at the calendar across the room. "The 28th of January, in the year 2011. 1:21PM. What about... Oh," his voice faded away as he recognized the date. "It's been a year already?"

Matt let his jaw drop open. "Woah. Really?" He subconsciously rubbed the scar on his forehead, where a bullet had brushed a year and two days prior.

Near nodded once. "Yes. It has been one year since bringing down the Kiras."

They sat in silence for a moment, each reliving their own memories of one year ago. It was broken by a sudden rumbling, which turned out to be Matt's stomach. "Sorry," he smiled nervously.

Mello stood and stretched. "On that note, I think I'm gonna go make some lunch. I'm kinda craving tacos."

"As long as you don't put Nutella on them again, I'm cool with that," Matt yawned and laid back where Mello had just been sitting.

"Only for you, Mattie." The blond disappeared into the next room.

Near stood as well, setting up his big box of dominoes. "I will be back in a moment," he said, and shuffled down the hall, towards the bathroom.

Deserted, Matt huffed and stood up. He glanced to make sure Near and Mello were both gone before dancing around the room silently, flailing his arms around like the lovable spaz he was. He whispered to himself as he swung his head around, "We won, we won, we won we won we won!"

"Hey, if I can't put Nutella on all of the tacos, can I at least...?" Mello poked his head around the corner and was cut off by a snort. "Uh, having fun, Matt?"

The redhead stopped dead like a deer in headlights, stumbling over his words. "Well, uh, I, er." He finally just stopped trying and hung his head.

Mello patted his shoulder lovingly. "It's okay Mattie, we all know what a geek you are," he leaned in, and whispered in his ear, "But you're my geek."

A/N: Hey there! ^^ I realized that today was the (in my opinion) wonderful day of January 28th, and decided to rustle up a nice little one-shot for the occasion. Ah, and no, I don't own Death Note, How It's Made, Snickers, or Nutella.
