Song Title: Did You by Kelly Clarkson

Prentiss knew what she had to do. It was now or never. She had to know. She was scared of the outcome, but she'd go insane if she didn't find out. She got out of her car and walked up to Hotchs front door. She knocked lightly not wanting to wake the little boy she knew was probably sleeping. Hotch opened the door with a look of surprise on his face.

"Prentiss? Is everything okay?"

Emily nodded her head. "I have to ask you something and I need you to answer me truthfully." Hotch stayed silent, but nodded for her to proceed. "I care about you Hotch…a lot. More than I should. I have to know if you feel the same as I do. Because I think we could really be something great together." Hotch continued to stare at Emily, but didn't answer. What was he supposed to say?

Emily started to feel like an idiot, but she had already come this far, why not continue. "Did you ever want to grab me and kiss me? Did you ever want to tell me all your hopes and dreams? Did you ever wish you came home to me at night? Did you ever feel this way? About me?"

Hotch looked into Emily's brown eyes and wanted to answer her in a way that wouldn't hurt her, but he knew that that was a lost cause. "Prentiss, I'm sorry to say that I haven't wanted to do any of that or thought that at all." He saw her eyes drop and her cheeks flush from embarrassment and he wanted to pull her to him and never let go. "I'm very sorry Prentiss, but even if I did feel that way about you nothing could come of it. There are rules." She nodded her head, then started to back up to leave.

"Alright, well I just needed to know. Can we pretend like this conversation never happened because I don't want it to be weird between us now," she asked hopeful.

"Of course. We'll forget it ever happened." Hotch said with a tight smile.

"Have a nice night," Emily said as she backed up and walked down the long hall towards the steps.

"Good night Emily." Hotch watched her go then hung his head. He didn't see the tears falling from Emily's eyes in despair, but he felt the ones that were leaving his own. He wouldn't risk losing her by starting a relationship with her no matter how much he wanted to. No matter how much his heart broke.
