The old woman died, and the girl sat up and looked around. "Well. That was interesting."

WHAT WAS?

"Oh, all of it. You know. Stuff." Then she turned to focus on her visitor. She smiled at him. "Hello, you."

Death gave her a cordial nod. GOOD DAY.

She bobbed her head in a considering fashion. "Could be better, could be worse, all things considered." She looked past him of a sudden. "Horsey!" She ran up eagerly and stroked Binky's muzzle, then, when he offered no objection, flung her arms about his neck as well as she could reach, it being a large horse and a fairly short girl. "Hug the horsey." Binky lowered his head obligingly.

Death grinned. This was not entirely surprising. SHALL WE BE OFF?

"Where to? The desert, I know, but then what?"

THAT IS UP TO YOU.

She sighed, looking suddenly uncomfortable. "Yeah, well, I know that too, and there's a little problem there."

Despite his lack of face, Death managed to convey the impression of a raised eyebrow. PLEASE ELUCIDATE.

The girl gave a little cough. "Okay, so, when you die you go wherever you believe you're going to go, right?"

AH. Death nodded in understanding. IS IT ATHEISM OR AGNOSTICISM? BELIEVE ME, NEITHER IS MATTER FOR UNDUE CONCERN. THERE ARE ARRANGEMENTS, AS IT WERE, FOR THESE.

"Oh, no, it's not that at all. I know what I believe."

WELL?

"I believe that I'll go wherever I believe I'll go."

Death paused, trying to get his skull around this circularity. YOU BELIEVE YOU WILL GO...

"... wherever I believe I'll go. Yeah."

They stood in silence for a moment.

I DO HOPE SORTING THIS OUT DOESN'T THROW ME OFF-SCHEDULE.
