The War is Really Over

Big brother's now gone

And the course he is on

Promises a view far from Dover

I'm now impatiently waiting

For that newspaper stating

That the war is really over

XX

When his flight hits the track

With a jerk and a smack

And out come the runway rovers

They'll him with a smile

That it will be a while

Before the war is really over

XX

When he's flying over some town

With an uneasy frown

At the RPG rounds coming over

He'll say "Any time is just fine

For them to call down the line

"Airmen, the war is over"

XX

I think of fighters and flak

How they can break Spooky's back

As I lie in my bed, turning over

No real sleep tonight

So in a letter I write

"When will the war be over?"

XX

The reply "It won't be that soon"

Only adds to my gloom

As my brother writes us from Hanover

But one of these days

He'll come home to stay

And the damn war will really be over.

A/N: The reference to Hanover is referencing Hanover, Germany. Since Germany is a member of NATO and the EU, and is actually invaded by the Russian Federation during the course of "Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3", it goes without saying that American aircraft would be able to fly sorties against the Russians from within Germany's borders. Dover refers to Dover, Delaware, while Spooky refers to the AC-130U Spooky, a heavily-armed ground-attack variant of the C-130 Hercules transport aircraft. Lastly, this poem is inspired by a World War II Allied airman's poem, "For You Der Var Ist Over". The length and basic structure of this poem are inspired by that unknown airman's work; the exact words in this poem are my own.
