Dumbledore's Desire

"Sir -- Professor Dumbledore? Can I ask you something?"
"Obviously, you've already done so," Dumbledore smiled. "You may ask me one more thing, however."
"What do you see when you look in the mirror?"
"I? I see myself holding a pair of thick, woolen socks."
Harry stared.
"One can never have enough socks," said Dumbledore. "Another Christmas has come and gone and I didn't get a single pair. People will insist on giving me books."
It was only when he was back in his bed that it struck Harry that Dumbledore might not have been quite truthful. But then, he thought, as he shoved Scabbers off his pillow, it had been quite a personal question.

Dumbledore watched as Harry disappeared under the invisibility cloak and a second later he heard the door click shut. Certain that Harry had in fact left the room, Dumbledore sighed and turned to the Mirror.
What do
I see in the mirror? he asked himself as he positioned himself in front of the it.He looked into the mirror knowing full and well what he was about to see, and that it had nothing to do with woolen socks.
Ah, Harry, if only you could know. If only you could know what I desire most. Unfortunately, what I want can never be so there is no point in hoping. All I can do is work with what I have.
As he turned and left the room, the image in the mirror of Harry growing up a normal boy without the Prophecy disappeared from view.
