I originally wrote this as a 250 word contest entry for GaiaOnline, one of the member run contents they host. This, however, is a slightly longer version then the contest entry as it has a bit more substance within the drabble and the ending is rather longer as well.

Actually, the original idea was meant to be the beginning of A) a larger oneshot or B) a multi chapter story of recovery based within the one month it took to get to the last 3 or 4 chapters of the manga. Either way they would both be a tie in with my 'On the Wings of Angels' story which I am currently revamping.

I watched Bakura silently. He seemed peaceful as he slept, one would never know he'd had a demonic spirit using him as a host in order to kill Yu...I mean Atem. And us as well, by association. I lead myself to wonder, however, had the spirit won, what would've happened? Would Bakura still be his host? Or would he simply be discarded like a piece of trash? Or maybe something worse?
Best not to dwell, I suppose.
I slowly reached over and brushed a piece of hair from his face, my fingers gently brushing his skin as I did. I saw movement, thent began behind his lids. I leaned back a moment, watching. His eyes began to flutter...
"Guys!" I cried, "He's waking up!
"Bakura!" I heard Yugi shout, excited and worried at the same time.
I watched Bakura's dull eyes begin to focus, he raised himself slightly to look around.
"W-what's going on...?" He asked innocently; I wonder how he would react to what happened.
"Bakura, are you okay?" Yugi asked. The look on Yugi's face had lost it's excitement, the worry lines now etched his brow. I wondered if Yugi was thinking about more then just Bakura.
"I...I don't know." Bakura's expression grew strange. "I feel...awkward. Alone, kinda. Almost...unburdened, in a way...why?" He looked at us, ever hopeful.
Yugi's face brightened, yet I could see a shadow of reluctance etched deep within his eyes. Nonetheless, he looked at Bakura firmly.

"Bakura...your finally free!" Yugi's words were more blunt then I'd expected. "For good this time!" For emphasis Yugi raised the ring. It glittered in the dim candle light and I moved my eyes from Yugi, to the ring, to Bakura. It was an awkward moment; I felt uneasy. Bakura just sat there, staring. And then, I saw tears slowly begin to leak from his brown eyes. A lump raised in my own throat, I was overwhelmed by the amount of relief reflecting in those eyes of his. I don't think I had ever seen it before.

And then he spoke. Just one word. That was all that was needed. Disbelief covered with a tone of hope. He still couldn't quite believe it.
"Free..."

And with that Bakura broke down in tears of pure release.
