I walked into the hospital as the doors slid open automatically. There was new doctor joining the staff today and I always make it my business to greet new members of the faculty. Moving to a new place is hard, as I very well know, and whatever makes the transition easier is appreciated.
Greeting Cynthia, the receptionist, as I passed I made my way to his office. On approach however I heard him arguing with someone on his cell phone. Not wanting to interrupt anything important I waited politely outside the door for him to finish. When I heard the cell phone snap shut, I knocked.
"Come in" he called.
I opened the door and entered to see him sitting at his desk with his head in his hands. He looked up at me and smiled sadly. "Sorry about that. I'm assuming you heard my little "discussion" with my father. David Adams," he said, standing up and reaching his hand out "I'm the new consultant for paediatrics."
"Carlisle Cullen," I said, shaking his hand," head of surgery here at Forks Hospital. Um… mind if I ask what that was about?" I gave him a tentative look.
"No, no, not at all. My father doesn't really approve of my transfer here to Forks. He thinks I should be reaching for "bigger and better" dreams." I nodded and smiled knowingly, thinking back to my father and his radical attempts to "cleanse the earth" and "exterminate the monsters".
"Well I don't have the best relationship with my father either." He looked at me inquisitively so I continued." Well my father was a minister and I was brought up very strictly religious: so you can guess that he wasn't exactly happy when I left the faith."
He chuckled and nodded. "No, I don't suppose he was. So you're an atheist then?"
My thoughts went to my family, the life we have and the loving bonds we share. I smiled happily and turned to him. "No…I only left his faith."
