Happy Birthday

He doesn't know the girl, though he's seen her before in the hallways. Short, small and sporting a mass of unusual blonde hair, she's hard to miss, a ball of energy that has a habit of drawing everyone's attention whether she means to or not.
So he's surprised when, at the end of the school day as he's gathering his things, she runs into the classroom and heads straight towards him, out of breath but grinning like the sun.
"I heard it was your birthday," she says suddenly.
"What? Oh, yeah." He wonders how she even knows who he is, tries to think of her name but comes up empty, remembers only that she is a year under him.
"Well, happy birthday!" Only when she thrust a clumsily wrapped package into his arms does he even notice she had been carrying anything.
Momentarily shocked, he fumbles for something to say, but when he glances up she is already out the room, running to join her classmates in the courtyard.
His best friend laughs and shakes his head. "Man, that was weird. Do you even know her?"
"No, hey—" He shoves his things into the other boy's arms. "Watch all this for me, will you?"
His friend starts to complain, but he ignores him and races through the hallways, not completely sure of what he's going to say when he catches up to her but willing to make a fool out of himself in the process of thanking her.
