On the nights that Munkustrap patrolled around the Junkyard, Bombalurina slipped into the den beside Demeter and held her.

The silver tabby knew, and he didn't mind. He knew that when she slept, she dreamed of things that would drive her insane if it weren't for his arms around her. He knew that when she was alone, she screamed. And she woke up and lay shivering in the empty den, imagining glowing eyes all around her and waiting for Macavity to come get her.

So when he returned in the morning and there was scarlet fur in his den, he didn't comment. When he came back too early and the queens were still laying there, Demeter safe in Bomba's arms, he walked away and let them sleep. And when Bombalurina strolled casually past him, into the den he shared with his Mate just as he walked out, he simply nodded a greeting to her and kept walking.

Bombalurina had cared for Demeter so long before Munkustrap had even known her, the silver tabby couldn't imagine interfering. It was Bombalurina that had comforted the golden queen at night when she had nightmares as a kitten; Bombalurina who had picked up the pieces when Macavity hurt her. And it was Bombalurina that had stood outside of the den she shared with her sister, staring at Munkustrap as Demeter announced that she would be moving to his den.

She'd barely blinked as she watched him, and Munkustrap didn't pay attention to what she said, only to what she meant: Take care of her.

And he hoped he'd gotten the meaning across through just his eyes as he stood beside Demeter: I will.

He knew he couldn't do it alone, so he accepted the scarlet queen's help. And she knew that he loved the gold queen with all of his heart, so she let him take over.

So when Munkustrap stayed in his den on a night he usually patrolled, holding a crying Demeter in his arms, Bombalurina stopped at the entrance. Watched him for a moment. And turned away.

The silver tabby was sure that, if he had bothered to look, he would find her walking along the fence, keeping an eye on the Yard for him.

A/N: So I'm not sure if this idea's been done before, but here it is anyway. It's not meant to be seen as slash, but I suppose it could be seen that way. Just a short little ficlet that took me about 15 minutes to type up, but that I wanted to share anyway. Not sure how good it is, but enjoy!
