A Big Brothers responsibility

(Narrative Point of view)

An 7 year old Charlie awoke with a start. She tried shaking her head to get that horrible image of her family lying on the ground life less… Out of her head.

Next she tried stuffing her head in her pillow, burying her head under the blankets, but nothing.

She breathed heavily while grabbing her ducky blanket wrapping it around her little shoulders. Her eyes watered, she wiped them away only making the red spot on her eyes grow bigger. Swinging her legs over her bed, her feet touched carpeted ground, but then she stopped.

Where was she suppose to go? Her parents were down way to far down the hall, Pj and Teddy moved out. So that only left one person: Gabe.

She then started moving again now knowing where to go. She made her way to the door, her path being lit by a little night light. She opened the door looked both ways before making her way across the hallway. Once there she opened the door and peered in.

There laid Gabe of 14 years asleep.

She slipped in the room and walked silently over to the bed.

"Gabe." She whispered wiping her watered eyes again making the red spot grow even bigger.

Gabe made no movement.

"Gabe." She tried again a little louder and shaking him.

Gabe this time groaned and turned over his eyes opening in the process.

(Gabe's point of view)

"What?" I snapped at my little sister.

I heard her gasp for air like she had been crying so I reached over to turn on my lamp. Her backed turned to me. She was already walking away.

"Charlie stop." I said, but she kept walking, like the stubborn child she is.

Then I heard the door to her bedroom quietly shut. I sighed the pulled my covers off and made my way to Charlie's bedroom.

Once there I listened at the door for a moment. Then I walked in. What I saw was heartbreaking even for me. There was Charlie her head buried in her hands, crying… I walked over to her bed, and sat down.

She looked up, her face tear stained.

Being the big brother, I pulled her into a hug.

"Nightmare?" I questioned.

I felt her nod against my chest. Then she started crying again. I couldn't tell if it was from me snapping at her or her nightmare. My T-shirt was getting wetter by the minute. I felt so helpless just sitting there holding her. I wish I could do more than that.

I started whispering confronting things to her.

"Gabe?" She whispered.

"Yea?" I whispered back.

"Do you mind staying in here with me tonight?" She asked.

I nodded got up picking her up with me. I put her down, then I pulled the covers back, then I picked her back up, set her down on the bed. I crawled in after her. Pulling the covers up over us. This is me doing my brotherly responsibility.

So review to tell me what you think.
