Something Different
-
At the end of the day faith is a funny thing.
It turns up when you don't really expect it.
It's like one day you realize that the fairy tale may be slightly different than you dreamed.
The castle, well, it may not be a castle.
And it's not so important happy ever after, just that it's happy right now.
See once in a while, once in a blue moon, people will surprise you,
And once in a while people may even take your breath away.

It's different. It is a different kind of night. There is no moon, but the stars seem to be enough light to illuminate the earth. The air lacks any breezy winds, but no one can. complain. And almost as if on cue, a pallid bird flies across the sky and over their heads. All seems calm, cool, and perfect, but it doesn't feel right. It's different. It is a different kind of night.
"Mugen," she speaks into the dark. He grunts quietly, so hushed that if there were wind blowing tonight, she would've missed it. She turns her head ever so slightly and glances at him. She always hated how he always seemed calm, always acted like nothing was wrong in the world. And she supposes it could be true. She supposes that with his sword, he felt as if everything is how it should be. She understands that concept every time she's with him. "Mugen, let's talk about something serious- like life. When I was little I always believed that god, whatever god is really real, was writing a story and that I was the main character. I wonder if he wanted you to be a major character."
A significant silence fills the space between them and suddenly they seem so far away from each other. Fuu backs up, even though she wants to reach out. She contemplates the idea of getting up and leaving when he finally speaks up.
"Life," Mugen repeats, letting the word slowly drawl out on his lips. He wants to snort, but he knows Fuu will get upset. He finally moves form his laid back position to look at her. He searches for an answer on her face. He looks for what she wants to hear, but all that he can see is an open mind. It's annoying and it's confusing, but somehow it makes him feel comfortable. He sharply looks away and declares, "Life is life."
Fuu, sensing that Mugen did not like to talk about this topic, suggests another. "How about friendship, Mugen? You must have something to say about that." Mugen looks back at her and notices that she seems to glow. The stars must have decided to cast a spotlight on her tonight, even though he felt she deserved it every single night.
"Friendship is simple. Leave or be left," Mugen bluntly stated. Fuu studies his face. She studies the way his unkempt hair is almost as messy as he is; the way his brows show every emotion with only the slightest curve; the way his mouth can say so many things without saying a word; and the way his eyes tell millions of stories with just one look.
"I would never leave you," she says whole-heartedly. He seems surprised, but then the look goes away. She searches for an emotion, but can only find a reaction. She hates it when he lets his image control him. He looks away and snorts, crossing his arms over his chest. Her gaze turns to the ground. "Would you leave me?"
Although he won't say it and although he won't admit it, she knows his answer. She finds the silence to be almost comforting. She leans forward and closer to him. "If I would never leave you and you would never leave me, we must not be friends," she says, almost treating the statement as a puzzle that could never be solved. "If we're not friends, what do you call our relationship?"
He looks over, a grin on his face. Fuu sees and places a smile upon hers too. He wraps his arm around her shoulder and pulls her closer. Suddenly there's a breeze pushing against his shoulder, and pushing him to open up. He knows exactly what to say.
"It's something different."
