Lady in Red

Prologue: simple

Summer Roberts wasn't really special. She wasn't extremely witty or extraordinarily profound. She wasn't the richest nor was she the prettiest girl at Marina High School. Summer wasn't really popular and she didn't drive the best car of all her classmates. She was just ordinary. Normal, if you will.

Sure, she was pretty and she got decent grades, but she was never the best at anything. And life sure didn't deal her a perfect hand. She never got the cutest boy or wore the most fashionable clothes. She was not one of Huntington's rich and privileged…not by a long shot. Summer busted her ass, day in and day out in three different jobs to save up for college and pay for her car because her parents were worthless. Her mother skipped out on the family years ago, never bothering to send Summer any information regarding her whereabouts or sending any salutations. Her father was a compulsive gambler who was always in Reno or Vegas gambling away their savings, or what little money they had. Her stepmother was a drunken whore who managed to belittle Summer and rob her of what little self esteem she had left each time she saw her. It wasn't a healthy environment to grow up in; it certainly offered no room for improvement. As soon as she graduated, Summer was leaving. It was time for something better, a change.

Now, Seth Cohen was a different story. He was Mr. Popular, Associated Student Body Junior Class President, captain of the golf team. His grades were impeccable; he was practically guaranteed admission into any Ivy League of his choice--even without his grandfather's connections. He was coveted by every girl who saw him and was envied by every guy who passed him in his Range Rover on the street. He exuded sex and confidence and power. His parents were supportive and nurturing, and they provided the perfect environment for him. He was seemingly perfect. Keyword: seemingly.

But there was one thing that he could not find. The one thing that kept eluding him over and over again. Love. Love escaped from his grasp so many times, that he had finally stopped really trying to have real relationships with real girls. He settled for the sluts of Harbor High School. It really was not the way to go. As soon as he got into college, he would be gone from this playground of the rich and vapid. He needed a change, a change for the better.

Two people, very different, yet so the same. Both very proud, too afraid to surrender any of their pride. But both wondered how life got so complicated for them. All they wanted was something simple, something real. They both wanted to feel and breathe and touch. They wanted the same things, but would either ever find it?
