Prologue

It wasn't an unusual day. Nothing about it seems to stand out in my memory. Nothing, except his face.

We were walking home from school. I remember the rain, how it came down in buckets. I didn't have my umbrella that day, but for some reason I didn't mind. It was a hot spring day, our second year of high school. The rain was cooling, the pressure relaxing. I danced in the street. I opened my mouth to the rain, stared at the pitch dark clouds.

That was my mistake. That's why it happened.

Kyo had been sick. He'd stayed home. I made him, because I was so worried. I worried about him so much. I cared for him so much. If anything were to happen to him... If anything were to happen to Yuki...

It was dark. So dark, You could hardly see. It was like midnight. The roads were slick, like ice. I saw the light, I stopped. I looked down, I turned around. The car was heading right at me.

I'm not sure what happened next. The next thing I knew I was on the ground, the hard asphalt, and Yuki was next to me. He was breathing heavily. His eyes were open though, so I thought he would be all right. His leg was mangled. There was a tear through his coat and uniform, showing bare skin and blood. Lots of blood.

"Miss Honda," he'd gasped.

"No, don't speak," I'd scolded him. "Save your energy."

"Miss Honda," he'd continued without listening to me. "I'm sorry..." And then he collapsed. The car had stopped a few meters ahead. Someone came running at me. A man.

"Are you kids all right?" he'd called over the drone of the rain. All I could think about was Yuki's blood, staining my skirt, mingling with the rain. Yuki's blood, because of me.

"Call an ambulance," I'd sobbed, collapsing on Yuki, getting his blood in my hair. "Call an ambulance!"

It's been seven years. Yuki still hasn't woken up.
