The frame falls to the ground and shatters when he closes the bedroom door, harder than he'd meant to. But it hardly matters. There's no one there to hear it…no one there to be awakened by the sound.

He goes down on his knees, shaking his head as he leans further down to start picking up the larger shards of glass. And once that's over and done with, he walks into the bathroom to throw it all away. When he walks back into the bedroom, he leans down again to retrieve what's left of the frame.

Six faces smile up at him. It takes a minute for him to realize exactly what it is that he's looking at. And when he does, he closes his eyes, sighing and suddenly feeling more exhausted than he had when he'd gotten home.

In his hands is the latest of the family portraits…the one that came right before everything got turned upside down.
