Sam slowly swung her legs out of bed, and tried to calm her breathing. It wasn't as if the dream was horrible, actually, it was quite pleasant. But it still bothered her.
She plodded her way down the hall to her kitchen and started making a pot of coffee. She tilted her head to the side, trying to remember the dream that bothered her so. "Pete," she said softly. "His name was Pete."
She poured herself a cup, and just stood at the counter, remembering what had sent her into a panic.
If she didn't know any better, she would have sworn it was real. But Pete met Selmak. People didn't meet Selmak. That's when the rational part of her brain knew that it was a dream. But still she stayed sleeping, enjoying the entertainment that she was being provided.
But why did it bother her? Why did she let it bother her? He was nice, caring, and he loved her. She could tell that.
He loved her despite her secrets, or in spite of them, didn't he?
She closed her eyes, and tried to remember the dream. It was fuzzy around the edges, but she could recall it.
He looked into her history. He was a cop after all. She smiled; he crashed a bust with Osiris. That should have been her first clue.
She sipped her coffee, remembering more and more. The way he looked at her, the way he felt against her skin. He bought her a ring. A beautiful ring.
Pete made her laugh. He had no demands of her other than for her… for her to tell her secrets.
Is that the way it was always going to be? If she was going to be anything, with anyone… would they always continue to question her?
But why did this dream bother her so? It wasn't the relationship; it wasn't Pete. It was something else.
Suddenly, an image flashed in front of her eyes.
She took a sharp breath, and exhaled it through her teeth. No. It shouldn't be.
"It can't… be." Sam's voice was heavy with emotion.
But it was, and Sam couldn't deny it. She had felt that way about him, for a very long time now. It was something that started as respect had turned into something more. And she knew he cared about her too. But they couldn't say anything… do anything… so she pushed it aside, into the back corners of her mind, and never, ever, took a peak into the box that she shoved it into.
But here it was. It was in the front of her mind. His image was uncomfortable there. But no matter how she tried, she couldn't push it away.
And why should she? Anubis had been defeated. The team… Her team had started on general recon missions again. For once the world wasn't going to end tomorrow if she didn't have the answers.
"Maybe it is time for me." She thought wistfully.
She got dressed for the day, a rare day when the saviors of Earth had a few days off. She knew where he would be. Where he always was when he had a few days to kill.
With her car keys in hand, she started on a path that for better or worse would change the way that she would be. She needed answers. She needed to know.
She sat in her car outside of his cabin. Minutes ticked by, as she prepared herself for whatever he would say.
She just hoped it would be positive, something to give her hope…
Sam raised her hand to knock on the door, and took a deep breath.
Jack opened the door, and stood there. A smile pulled at the corners of his mouth.
"Carter, this was… unexpected."
"I need to ask you something." She said, the words gushing from her, "It's just you and me, and I need to know."
He opened the door for her, and she walked into, what she hoped, was a new destination. A new beginning for her… for them.
End.
