Albus Dumbledore was a strange man. His mind worked in many ways that none could put together, ranging from the clever Professor who discovered twelve uses of dragon's blood to a 'scary and powerful' sorcerer who the darkest wizard in Britain was afraid of.

Now Dumbledore did not prize himself on his Order of Merlin (first class) or Grand Sorcerer status, nor his other achievements. He prized himself not on his Chocolate Frog card either, but in knowing what to do in a situation. Clearly, it was his only one true talent. Most people would fret and not know what to do in a stressed situation or not know what to say, he always knew how to calm the situation, as it usually happened with his mere presence. He was however stuck on one small situation.

The situation was something he dealt annually with, usually not a very hard decision. There he was sitting in his office currently 1977, the August sun shining through the windows, a piece of parchment and a pen in his hand. One might ask what this weird plastic contraption was, while others would ask why a wizard such as himself would use a pen. A muggle object he would explain, ignore the sometimes crude looks, and the questions ("What the bloody hell does that do?") and simply reply all the questions about the utensil with "I'm afraid that quills and inkwells are only for ascetics. Try to invest in one of these, they're very useful."

The sun shone through the windows, lying on a piece of parchment on a cluttered desk that read:

These names had all of the prefect's names of that year who could be potential Head students, most of them scratched and crossed out. Only two remained out of the original sixteen planned, and those were girls. Dumbledore crossed out the name "Emily Johnson" leaving only Lily Evans. Dumbledore wrote that name down on a separate piece of paper with his pen, and then went back to his list. There were no names left to chose from on the Boy's side. They had all been very good students, albeit Remus Lupin the best. Although he would have been very good as head boy, he did not want to add anything more to the boys worries, due to his unfortunate condition.

Dumbledore always did like to twist up the rules, so pausing for a moment and thinking, he wrote another name on the list, and then sent it on it's way down to the deputy Headmistress's office with the aid of a charm. A few minutes later, another small note zoomed into his office, writing in emerald ink, the use of a quill, it read:

"Are you sure?"

Dumbledore smiled at the parchment, his blue eyes twinkling. He brought out his trusty pen and wrote:

"Minds work in many ways" he replied, sending the parchment zooming back.

After a moment of sitting and thinking, Albus Dumbeldore though of himself as barmy, he was many things, but barmy was always one of them, as the original note he sent Minerva McGonagall read:

Head Students 1977-78, Hogwarts
