One Harsh Word

I walked down the street,
My heart warmed
By the recent smile
Someone gave me.

As I walked down the street
I heard a sound
Like someone whispering,
And I heard,
One harsh word towards me.

My inner smile vanished,
My thoughts now turned to hatred,
Just because of
One harsh word.

But then I stopped
For a moment,
And realized,
What had just occurred.

By one small smile
My heart was warmed,
And yet my heart was stoned
By one harsh word.

The one small smile
And the one harsh word,
Were like a stone thrown
Into a pool of calm water.

Each one
Made a lasting impression,
On the still water,
And on my heart.

So be careful now
What you do, and say
For each small smile,
And each harsh word,
Will be remembered for eternity.
