Authors Note: So this will be a multi chapter fic. David-El came up with the wonderful prompt about Mark Evans being Harry's cousin and a muggleborn. Mark Evans is the boy Harry briefly mentions Dudley bullying in Order of the Phoenix. I thought it would be very interesting to play around with this year. It is set in Order of the Phoenix.
Disclaimer: All characters of the Harry Potter franchise belong to the wonderful J.K. Rowling. I only own Evelynn and Rowan.
Prologue
If anyone ever asked, Mark Evans would describe himself as a perfectly normal ten year old. Sure he had gotten into his fair share of sticky, slightly wacky situations but he wasn't some sort of freak. Freak. Now that was a word that he could not stand. In all his ten years, Mark could confidently say that he had never been called a freak. That word just was not used around him. Well...it hadn't not until his mother decided to uproot his tiny family and move them to Surrey. Said tiny family included Mark, Mark's mother, and two cat's.
Now some might ask where for the whereabouts of Mark's father and the young boy would answer proudly albeit sadly. Rowan Evans had been killed in action while in service to Her Majesty's Royal Navy. It could be assumed from this statement that Rowan's untimely demise would be the reason that Mark's mother, the now widowed Evelynn Evans, decided to move.
Rowan Evans was the youngest of three children. He was raised in a loving if not tense atmosphere. The latter could solely be blamed on his older sisters and their strange feud. Now when Rowan was sixteen his middle sister, a lovely woman by the name of Lily, was killed alongside her husband James. At the time only Rowan's older sister, Petunia, was able to take Lily's infant son. A decision that Rowan did no agree with, seeing as there was no love loss between his two older sisters. Rowan was neither old enough nor in a stable enough environment to raise young Harry. In the end he had no say in what would happen to Lily's only child. As the years went by Rowan severed all ties with Petunia, unable to listen to the things the woman and her oaf of a husband would say about Lily.
Before her death, Lily and Rowan had been very close and because of this Rowan had been privy to one of Lily's deepest wishes. His sister had once confided in him that she would one day wish to travel the world. In honor of this wish, Rowan enlisted in the Royal Navy as soon as he was of age. This led to Rowan traveling the world and seeing sights he wished Lily could have seen but it also led to the inevitable meeting of with his future bride to be, Evelynn Wills. This decision would go down in Rowan's mind as the best decision he had ever made. At least, that's what he would tell Mark whenever the boy asked about his father about his family.
Now a days, Mark believed his father's decision to join the navy as just plain stupid. If he hadn't then his father would still be alive. If he was alive then his mother wouldn't have had moved them to Surrey. More specifically Privet Drive. If Mark did not live in Privet Drive then he would be spared the unfortunate displeasure of meeting one Dudley Dursley.
