Breakeven

As usual, I do not own these characters, because L.J Smith does

Under a starry night sky. That is where the dreams always start. Ash took my hand, and I smiled at him.

"What would I do without you, my M'lin" he says, staring deeply into my eyes.

"What would you do? Don't you mean who?" I say, almost teasingly, but the reality of our situation sinks in.

A year.

One whole stinking year.

That's how long he'll be gone. Why choose me over allthose other girls? The unearthly beauty of the lamia, with eyes as bright as stars and hair as beautiful as far away galaxies...

I am now I am in the very same field, but Ash isn't with me anymore. He was smiling at another girl, flirting and laughing and happy. She smiles and flutters her eyelashes at him. He reaches out and grasps her hand, trailing kisses up her arm. She smiles and says "I'm so glad we're together Ash, I missed you while you were on holiday" He chuckles and says something about how he missed her too, and how no one else is the girl for him. She laughs and leans in for a kiss. I run to him and shake him, tears running down my face. He turns and sighs.

"Ash, don't you remember me? Mary – Lynette? Your soul mate?" I sob.

He smiles sadly and says "Mare, I don't love you. I am in love with Aline," gesturing to the pretty vampire. She turned and grinned widely at me, a grin that said- I have what you want.

I wake up crying again, the same hole in my heart that has been there the last few months. I'm in Rowan's house and she hugs me as I sob and asks if she can help. She strokes my hair and rocks me until I stop crying. She goes to make breakfast as I stare brokenly at the bedside table with his number on a post it note, where he left it.

It's been 11 months since Ash Redfern left me. He called me for my birthday, and for Christmas/ thanksgiving. We send letters to each other once a month and he tells me about what he's doing to make up for what he's done. Mark and Jade are going out, and I am happy for them. Staying in the same room as them is painful though. The love and adoration in the looks they send each other is almost unbearable.

"Mare!" Rowan calls, an edge to her voice that I don't understand. "There's a call for you!."

Cliff-hanger! Is it Ash? Are Mare's worst nightmares coming true? Ash and Mare will meet up soon enough in this story. Review please; I need to know whether to continue.

Much thanks to my amazing beta, MortalEnemies1234, for being patient with me and fixing mistakes, and for producing fantastic inspiration with her fanfic She lives in you.
